Following a series of troubling off-court incidents both during and after the NBA season, the league decided to suspend Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant for the first 25 games of next year’s campaign.
The length of the suspension was heavily debated. Some felt it was harsh for a player who, as everyone is aware, has not committed a crime.
Others felt that Morant needed to be suspended for longer to show his fellow players that such conduct would not be tolerated.
Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman stopped short of applauding the suspension of his star player, but his reaction indicates that he believes the punishment was justified.
“I think the discipline from the NBA was appropriate,” Kleiman said about Morant following Thursday’s NBA Draft.
“”I think the thing to focus on at this point is … what’s Ja going to commit to moving forward? What are the steps that he’s prepared to take for the NBA to grant the ability to rejoin the team after serving the suspension?”

Morant was suspended for eight games during the regular season and appeared to be genuinely apologetic for his actions.
He admitted that he needed to take accountability and find better ways to manage his mental health.
A new video of Morant appearing to hold a gun went viral last month, prompting the NBA to step in and issue the 25-game suspension.
Kleiman says that Morant’s work to better himself is ongoing and the team is aware of that, but also noted that they have “high expectations” regarding his accountability going forward.
