Grosvenor Girls report on racism probe to be made public

KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC, Kwazi Mshengu has received the report on the racism probe at Grosvenor Girls High School in Durban.

The school was in the spotlight in February this year after learners accused the principal of racial discrimination who made reference to their hair. They additionally accused the principal of discriminatory slurs. An Independent Panel was then tasked to conduct an investigation on allegations of racism and financial administration.

In February, the angry learners took to the streets outside the Grosvenor Girls High School to protest against a school that allegedly treats black and coloured girls unfairly. They alleged that racism was an ongoing issue at the school. Parents shortly followed suit and joined their children who demanded change as well as the removal of the principal.

The principal, Linda Jorgensen was then placed on precautionary suspension and MEC Mshengu appointed a task team to probe the allegations.

The panel was led by Senior Counsel Vusi Khuzwayo who was assisted by evidence leader advocate Makhosini Nkosi; educational psychologist Nontobeko Buthelezi; and attorney Jacqueline Pretorius-Bishop. SD Moloi and Associates are providing additional support.

Mshengu said he will be studying the report and will then brief KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala on the findings and recommendations.

“The intention is by next week, I will release the report to the public and indicate what actions the Department will take based on the findings and recommendation of the report,” Mshengu said.
