Group of Rescuers come together to Rescue a Canine that fell into a Crevice

Recently, a twelve-year-old canine named Liza fell into a narrow rock crevice while she along with her pet parent had gone for a hike at Minnewaska State Park Preserve in Ulster County. Liza’s pet parent and the staff members of Minnewaska State Park’s tried to rescue the canine but were not able to do so.

The staff members also tried to maneuver a camera into the crevice in order to understand the canine’s condition in a better way. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get a clear or better view of the canine.

A team of rescuers from the Ulster County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the volunteers from the New Jersey Initial Response Team (NJIRT) and rescuers from a regional group specializing in cave rescue arrived at the Minnewaska State Park. The group of rescuers arrived to assist Liza to rescue the canine from the rock crevice.

Two rescuers from the NJIRT stepped down into the crevice and located the canine. They were equipped with a specialized “plumbing inspection camera”. The rescuers carefully got a catch pole around Liza and pushed her up towards the opening of the crevice. They picked her high enough at the top so that she could be pulled out of the crevice easily.

While speaking to a local news agency, chief of the New Jersey Initial Response Team, Mark Dickey stated that it was a tight vertical fissure that caused an even tighter horizontal crack. Only one of their smallest team members, Jessica Van Ord was able to squeeze herself through the cracks and rescue the canine. He mentioned that this incident was a reminder that a single misstep by a human, kid or even an animal near the caves or cliffs can be deadly.

Fortunately, the pup was rescued and it created a cause for celebration. However, the New York State Park is taking Liza’s story as an example to remind other pet parents about the park rules and the safety precautions. This incident reminds all that it is very necessary to keep canines on a leash as it is an important way to protect pets.
