The highly-anticipated encounter between mentor MS Dhoni and his protege Hardik Pandya again landed in favour of the latter’s side, who were the better team on the day.

Gujarat Titans didn’t do anything wrong right from the moment the coin landed in their favour. Hardik’s decision to bowl first on a surface which gets better as the day progresses turned out to be correct and he was vindicated with the result.

Having restricted CSK to 178-7 at the end of 20 overs, GT batters overhauled the target in 19.2 overs with five wickets in hand. Ruturaj Gaikwad played a whirlwind knock of 92 off just 50 deliveries before getting dismissed to a pretty ordinary delivery.

The talented Maharashtra cricketer’s knock looked like poetry in motion as he never tried to muscle the ball. Throughout his stay in the middle, he was timing the ball brilliantly and making use of the field placings.

Later, Shubman Gill – the rising star in Indian cricket – also showcased his class and temperament and slammed a brilliant half-century and laid the foundation for Gujarat Titans’ third straight win over CSK.

Rashid Khan was awarded the player of the match for his disciplined bowling effort upfront. The leg-spinner struck in his first over itself by dismissing Moeen Ali and later dismissed Ben Stokes. He even contributed with the bat.

GT vs CSK IPL 2023 Match 1: Who Said What

Winning Captain, Hardik Pandya: (On the win) Obviously very happy. We did put ourselves in a difficult situation but Rahul and Rashid did very well. We were happy at the mid-innings because at one point they looked like getting 200, but we got those couple of wickets to pull things back.

(On Impact Rule) Having this Impact rule makes my job difficult. I have too many options, and because of this someone will bowl less. In this game I realised bowling hard lengths was the way to go, that’s why Alzarri bowled late.

(On Rashid Khan) Having Rashid is a real asset, he will get you wickets and get you some runs late down the order as well. But today my shot and Shubman’s shot weren’t the best, we need to do better to ensure we don’t put the responsibility on these guys lower down.

Losing Captain, MS Dhoni: (On CSK batting) We all knew there will be dew. We could have done a bit more with the batsman ship. Ruturaj (Gaikwad) was brilliant, he times the ball well and he’s a pleasure to watch. The way he picks his options, it is pleasing to watch.

(On Debutant Rajvardhan Hangargekar) I think it’s important for youngsters to step in. I think Raj (Hangargekar) has pace and he will get better with time. Think the bowlers will get better, a no-ball is something that’s in your control, so you need to work on that.

(On Why Moeen Ali didn’t bowl) I felt two left armers will be a better option so I went ahead with them. Shivam was an option, but I felt comfortable with the bowlers overall.

Player of the Match, Rashid Khan: (On the award) So happy to get this crucial Man of the Match. Will give me a lot of the energy for the rest of the competition. I try to do my best in all three formats, and give it all in the practice sessions.

(On his bowling strategy) The plan is hard to bowl to lefties, but the idea was to keep it tight and I knew in my mind that if I keep it simple and get two wickets, we will be back in the game. I knew if I kept it simple we will get the results.

(On improved batting) It is all thanks to the time we spend in the nets and the confidence given to me by the coaching staff and captain Hardik. I’ve been batting a lot and the results are there to see.
