Mumbai Indians have revived their season late and qualified for the playoffs as late as the last ball of the league stages. Defending champions Gujarat Titans, on the contrary, was the first team to reach playoffs and topped the league phase before second-placed Chennai Super Kings defeated them in Qualifier 1 last Tuesday.
As far as head-to-head is concerned, this is the fourth time the two franchises will face off with Gujarat Titans leading 2-1. Their last encounter was less than a fortnight ago in Mumbai, which Rohit Sharma and his side won by 27 runs.
GT vs MI injury update and key players
GT injury update Yash Dayal missed the last game due to an injury and was replaced by Darshan Nalkande. There’s concern about Hardik Pandya’s fitness too as the skipper hasn’t bowled in four games now. Also, the mystery over Sai Sudharsan remains as the in-form batter was dropped again after playing just a game in a one-month period.
GT key players Shubman Gill has been in the form of his life with 700 runs this IPL, including two centuries recently. Vijay Shankar and David Miller have been in good form as well while Abhinav Manohar, Rahul Tewatia, and Rashid Khan provide further depth down the order.
Bowling has been Gujarat Titans’ prime strength as well with Mohammad Shami (26 wickets) and Rashid Khan (25) occupying the top two spots in the purple cap race. Mohit Sharma has been complimenting the duo well with 11 wickets in the last four games while Noor Ahmad has been the second lead in the spin department behind Rashid.
Out of form There’s a bit of concern over the forms of Hardik Pandya and Wriddhiman Saha, who have failed to click with the bat in the last four games. The duo, however, has played some key knocks before that.
MI injury update Mumbai Indians are without Jofra Archer for the playoffs after the bowler was replaced by Chris Jordan while Tilak Varma returned to the side after an injury lay-off.
MI key players Rohit Sharma scored a half-century recently but his form has struggled to show fluency. The rest of Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Cameron Green, and Nehal Wadhera have been the side’s mains strength. Green’s form, in particular, has been decisive while Tilak Varma and Tim David have been tasked with finishing roles.
Among bowlers, Akash Madhwal has emerged as the new star with a match-winning 5-5 spell in the last game while Piyush Chawla is the leading wicket-taker with 16 wickets. Jason Behrendorff has done a fair job with the new ball as well with seven wickets in six games.
