The defending champions won the match by 34 runs. They are sitting pretty on top of the table, with 18 points after 13 matches. With the win, GT have now almost sealed their top two status as well. On the other hand, SRH are officially out of the tournament.

Batting first, Shubman Gill’s sublime maiden IPL century took Gujarat Titans to 188/9 in their 20 overs. Gill scored 101 runs off 58 balls, becoming the first GT player to get to the three-figure mark. SRH pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up 5 wickets with the ball as GT lost 4 wickets in the last over.

In the run chase, Mohammed Shami rattled the SRH batters. He picked up 3 wickets in his three powerplay overs as SRH were reeling at 45/5 at about the 7th over. Heinrich Klaasen was the sole fighter for the Hyderabad side, but the South African’s valiant 64 runs went in vain as they could only manage 154/9 at the end.

Mohammed Shami (4/21) and Mohit Sharma (4/28) were the gladiators for the Titans as the pacer duo dismantled SRH.

Aiden Markram (SRH Captain): Still believed at half time that we had a chance, but losing four wickets in powerplay didn’t help. We were slightly off. We’ve got bowlers who can swing the ball. But you have to give credit to the way Shubman batted. Credit has to go to Bhuvi for showing how it’s done.”

(On Klaasen) “He is a great player. Very happy for him. Klaasen is a great player with class, power and a good cricketing brain. Unfortunately, we haven’t helped him and that’s why we have ended up on the losing side despite him batting extremely well. We haven’t been at our best.

Hardik Pandya (GT Captain): Very proud of the boys. This year we knew there will be challenges, but the way they have played, we have rightly earned our place in the playoffs. I spoke with the boys about expectations and it was important to focus within the group. We made errors but we were more consistent.

People focused on the right thing and that is the reason for our decent performance. Bowlers are very close to my heart, sometimes batter takes credit but I will always be a bowler’s captain and make sure they get the due credit.

Shubman Gill (Player of the Match): It’s pleasing to get my IPL hundred. hopefully will get more of those this season. It’s all about situation you are playing, I don’t dwell too much on the last innings, I just focus on how much you can make use of the situation that you are in. The most satisfying shot was the six off Abhishek as we are childhood friends.

1000 – Shubman Gill became the 1st ever player to score 1000+ runs for Gujarat Titans.

1 – Shubman Gill also scored his first IPL century on the day. He is also the first GT player to score a hundred in IPL.

250 – Shubman also completed 250 fours in IPL.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up five wickets in the match, his 2nd five-wicket haul in IPL. He was also the second-highest run-scorer with the bat for SRH with 27 runs.

17 – Gujarat Titans have used only 17 players this season, the least in the IPL this year.

Gujarat Titans are the first team to qualify for IPL 2023 playoffs.

This is only the second instance in IPL history that a century and a five-fer have happened in the same game. The only other occasion; Jos Buttler (103) and Yuzvendra Chahal (5/40) in RR vs KKR in 2022.
