Diane Keaton may be the undisputed godmother of the coastal grandmother aesthetic, but Gwyneth Paltrow has proven herself to be its spiritual goddaughter with this look.
The Goop founder has paired chunky gold jewelry and a belted knit on top with loose-fitting black Bermuda shorts and black leather Birkenstocks on the bottom, and each piece (minus the Birks) looks like it probably costs more than a house. The most appropriate place to wear this look is not a late night show, it is a historic mansion in Maine overlooking the Atlantic.
Then again, one defining feature of the coastal grandmother (CG) look, in addition to loose fits and luxe fabrics, is a muted color palette, which Paltrow has omitted in favor of bright, cherry-red. Let’s call it coastal great-aunt aesthetic then.
Paltrow didn’t wear the sophisticated set for her Jimmy Kimmel Live appearance, which was on Halloween.
For the show, she dressed up as Winnie the Pooh’s chic older relative, Gwynnie the Pooh. Get it? But don’t let the lifestyle tycoon’s mature facade fool you—she admitted to Kimmel that she’s been known to act out every once in a while.
Specifically, she said that as a kid, she lived on the same street as Arnold Schwarzenegger, who’s home she occasionally T.P.’d. “We did it unfortunately to a few houses there. But he was our pride and joy,” she told the late night host.
It takes a certain amount of boldness to prank the Terminator’s house, so Gwyneth Paltrow has earned a bit of my respect here. But more importantly, she has inspired me to start raiding my own grandmother’s closet for expensive cardigans and roomy shorts. I’ll be back.
