On June 24, 2022 the US Supreme Court overturned the landmark decision of Roe vs Wade in Dobbs vs Jackson Women’s Health Organization, thus making abortions illegal in many parts of the USA. The decision was met with a huge dissent by people who saw it as a regressive step in the way of women’s rights. A lot of celebrities including former US President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama have spoken against this decision, and recently singer Halsey penned an op-ed for Vogue in response to this decision as well.
In the note, Halsey started by sharing what she was feeling the day she gave birth to her first born son, Ender, on July 14, 2021. Going further, she revealed having suffered three miscarriages before that. She said, “I miscarried three times before my 24th birthday. It seemed a cruel irony that I could get pregnant with ease but struggled to maintain a pregnancy.”
Halsey went on to reveal that an abortion was a necessity in one of those cases for her. “One of my miscarriages required “aftercare,” a gentle way of saying that I would need an abortion, because my body could not terminate the pregnancy completely on its own and I would risk going into sepsis without medical intervention. During this procedure, I cried. I was afraid for myself and I was helpless. I was desperate to end the pregnancy that was threatening my life.”
She shared that while she was overjoyed with the birth of her son and “the euphoria of chosen motherhood”, she also revealed how she was prepared for the worst this time around as well. “I rewrote my will during the third trimester of my pregnancy. After my past experiences, I was prepared for the worst. I gave detailed instructions regarding the donation of my organs should I die or be declared brain-dead, meaning if my heart beat on but my brain wasn’t functioning, the state would have permission to cut into my warm and still flush flesh and take my organs to save other lives. How funny that while my own heart would amount to nothing more than a series of involuntary movements on an operating table, a beating heart in my womb could mean I couldn’t consent to saving my own life,” she pointed out.
The singer informed that while people have asked if years of struggle to conceive have changed her stance on abortions, she hasn’t shifted her mind even a bit. “Many people have asked me if, since carrying a child to term after years of struggling to do so, I have reconsidered my stance on abortion. The answer is firmly no. In fact, I have never felt more strongly about it. My abortion saved my life and gave way for my son to have his. Every person deserves the right to choose when, if, and how they have this dangerous and life-altering experience. I will hold my son in one arm, and fight with all my might with the other,” she concluded.
The whole of United States have been divided on this landmark decision by the Supreme Court. While some believe it to be a victory for the Christian right in American politics, many see it as several steps back for women and their rights.
