An emotional Carrie Bickmore has revealed she is departing her long-running position as host of The Project.
Bickmore, 41, took to Instagram Tuesday afternoon to share how her time on Network 10’s news and current affairs program was coming to a close.
“After 13 years at The Project I have made the tough decision to finish up hosting the show at the end of the year,” she said.
“It’s been the hardest decision of my professional life but it’s time for a new challenge and my next chapter.
“I am going to miss my best mates on the desk and our wonderful viewers so much. The show has been a second home to me and I couldn’t be more thankful to everyone involved in it.”
Bickmore’s post included two photos of herself and son Ollie on the newsdesk; one when he was a youngster and one now he’s 15.
“I look forward to more family dinners and watching the show with my pj’s on and a wine in hand,” she said.
“I’ll say more about the amazing people I work with when it’s time to say my final goodbye… but for now I will enjoy every show I have left until the end of the year.”
Bickmore also fought back tears as she shared the development with viewers at the end of Tuesday evening’s program.
“It’s time for a new challenge. It is time for my next chapter,” she said.
She admitted what that next move is was still to be decided, adding: “I’m gonna move onto something different which I do not know what that is yet.”
Bickmore was an inaugural member of The Project team that launched the program in 2009.
Co-host Peter Helliar said: “We’re still getting our heads around it and we don’t know what the future looks like. You are the soul of this show, the captain of this show and we’re excited for what’s ahead.”
“It’s huge news.”
Bickmore returned to the program in July having taken three months off after her family moved to the UK.
She conceded her European stay with young daughters Adelaide and Evie, teenage son Ollie and partner Chris Walker wasn’t always plain sailing.
“And so comes to an end the most incredible few months…. Was it perfect NO. Was it always easy NO. Was it worth it YES YES YES. Nothing worthwhile comes easily. I am just so glad we had a crack. Memories made that we’ll talk about forever,” she said.
While she and her family was away, Bickmore’s husband found himself at the centre of a nude Skype scandal.
Walker, a senior ABC producer, believed he had logged off from a video call with colleagues at The Weekly when he stripped off in front of the camera on May 17.
The incident was witnessed by up to nine people and lasted between 40 seconds and two minutes, the Herald Sun reported at the time.
