Harold & Kumar 4: John Cho Wants to Reunite With Kal Penn for Another Adventure

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle star John Cho has declared that he would love to return for a fourth outing in the stoner buddy comedy franchise, and thinks a comeback for the titular duo “would be fun.” Speaking with Comicbook.com, Cho does admit that, much like Harold and Kumar themselves, they are struggling to get their act together. But he is eager to see the Harold and Kumar saga return.

“As far I know we haven’t gotten our act together making Harold & Kumar 4. But yeah that would be fun.”

John Cho’s Harold and Kal Penn’s Kumar were first introduced back in 2004’s Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, which follows the nerdy accountant Harold and his irrepressible friend Kumar as they get stoned and find themselves utterly bewitched by a commercial for White Castle. Convinced there must be one nearby, the two set out on a late-night odyssey, with their simple task instead finding them facing rednecks, cops and even a car-stealing Neil Patrick Harris.

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle was met with positive reviews from both critics and audiences alike, leading to the far more ludicrous sequel, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, in 2008. The last audiences saw of the pair was in 2011’s A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, which picks up several years after their time spent in Guantanamo Bay. Having grown apart, and now with kids of their own, Harold and Kumar must unite once again after inadvertently burning down Harold’s father-in-law’s prize Christmas tree.

While considered an improvement on its predecessor, none of the sequels have managed to capture the same magic as that first adventure. Perhaps the fourth time is the charm…

John Cho is not the only one who would love to see Harold and Kumar return, with his co-star Kal Penn revealing that he wants Harold and Kumar 4 to take the duo higher than ever before. And into outer space. “Helllll yes! Oh man, look, all my tattoos are astronomy-related, so I kinda like the idea of going to the space station,” the actor said back in 2020 about his hopes for a sequel.

Not only would Penn love to see Harold and Kumar explore the cosmos (presumably with Neil Patrick Harris in tow), he also feels that Harold and Kumar 4 is one of the rare occasions where a straight to streaming release would be proper. “I feel like it’s gotta be a streamer because people just love watching [these movies] in the comfort of their own home on a Friday night at 2 a.m., which is more streaming ‘binge-able’ than it is going to the theater,” he said.

While we await the long-awaited return of Harold and Kumar, John Cho can next be seen in the Apple TV+ series, The Afterparty, which centers on a high school reunion’s afterparty that ends in a death, making everyone is a suspect.

The Afterparty season two is set to premiere on July 12, 2023.
