Harry Redknapp’s wife Sandra has ‘suffered’ with health problems since testing positive for Covid earlier this year, leaving the former football manager fearing for her life.

Sandra, who has been married to the ex-Bournemouth manager for 55 years, was struck down with the virus in January.

The couple had taken self-isolation seriously during the pandemic as Sandra had pre-existing health issues after falling ill with sepsis twice in the past 10 years.

Sandra’s battle with Covid had an impact on her body following her past health problems, and she struggled to breathe resulting in two operations.

‘The symptoms weren’t good, if I’m truthful. You start to think about all kinds of sinister things. It’s been a real worry,’ Harry, 75, said in an interview.

‘Sandra has suffered. Her voice had packed up and she was struggling for breath. Even swallowing food became difficult. She could choke on food easily if we weren’t careful.’

The symptoms included Sandra’s vocal cords being ‘paralysed’ and she had to communicate by writing.

She added to The Sunday Mirror: ‘You don’t realise what your vocal cords do until they’re not working, because it affects breathing as well as talking. The shortness of breath was very difficult. My voice would vibrate and was very weak.’

Fortunately, Sandra has confirmed she is ‘on the mend’.

Sandra, who shares two children with Harry including former footballer Jamie Redknapp, fell ill with sepsis in 2017 before being diagnosed with the bacterial infection again in May 2018.

Sepsis is a life-threatening reaction to an infection and happens when the immune system overreacts to an infection and starts to damage the body’s own tissues and organs.

Harry previously shared his fears for his wife’s health during the pandemic, and said on TalkRadio in 2020: ‘We just can’t take any chances now, I think the more you see happening in this country, the more careful you’ve got to be.

‘I do worry that she’s okay.

‘It’s a very serious matter and we’ve got to stick together and look out for people who need help, elderly people, you’ve got to help everybody.’
