Hatton open to Mayweather rematch after in-ring return against Barrera

Ricky Hatton is open to rematching Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition bout after his upcoming contest with Marco Antonio Barrera. The pair fought each other as professionals back in 2007 with ‘TBE’ coming away the victor via a tenth-round technical knockout.

Mayweather recently revealed that he is planning to fight in the United Kingdom next February following his bout against British YouTuber Deji Olatunji this weekend. Given all of the hype surrounding their first encounter and ‘Hitman’s’ legendary status on British shores, a second fight would no doubt make sense from a financial standpoint.

When asked whether he would box Mayweather again during an interview with Sky Sports, Hatton responded: “I’d have to look at it. To share the ring with Floyd Mayweather again would be something else.”

Before a fight with Mayweather can be made, Hatton will have to get through former three-weight world champion Barrera on Saturday. Hatton and Barrera were supposed to square off on July 2, but the event was postponed after Hughie Fury – who was headlining the show against Michael Hunter – fell ill.

“And they [the organisers] said ‘listen, it’s been a bad time for the nation so how about one last dance at Manchester Arena against Marco Antonio Barrera just to bring people’s spirits up after such a terrible time – we’ve all been locked up in our houses, not much going.’

“I thought ‘yeah, that sound alright to me.’ It was a very easy decision to make for me. I haven’t stepped in the ring yet but the feedback I’ve got from people seeing how I’ve turned my figure around and changed my way of thinking has inspired a lot of people.”
