Hayden Panettiere opens up about the ‘heartbreaking’ decision to relinquish custody of her daughter

After a tumultuous few years, Hayden Panettiere is opening up about issues with postpartum depression and addiction that led her to relinquish custody of her daughter, Kaya.

In an episode of Red Table Talk, host Jada Pinkett Smith asked the Heroes star what the public misunderstands about her. “The idea that I’m a person who would just easily throw out my child, give away my child,” Panettiere responded in a clip shared with USA Today. In 2017, she revealed that she was seeking treatment for struggles related to her postpartum depression; the following year, Kaya went to live with her father, boxer Wladimir Klitschko, in Ukraine. Klitschko and Panettiere had split that year.

“The comments that people made, or things that they assumed about my situation with my daughter were just so…heartbreaking,” she continued. “There was a cover of a magazine, I was walking through the airport, it said something like, ‘Why Hayden chose to give up her daughter.’ I was just like, this is so misrepresented. People are like, ‘How dare you, you’re a horrible mother, I could never do that to my child.’ So it was tough and it took me a long time to be able to talk about it.”

She added that one reason she didn’t speak up earlier is that she didn’t want to “upset” the person who had “control” of Kaya, presumably meaning Klitschko.

In another clip from the episode, shared with People, Panettiere said what she had hoped would happen when she gave her ex full custody: “If [Klitschko] had come to me and said, ‘I think because of where you’re at right now and your struggles that you’re having, it would be good for her to be over here with me for a while’—which, if I had probably had enough of a conversation, I would’ve said, ‘Okay, that makes sense, I get it, I’ll come there to visit’ and stuff like that,” she recalled.

“It was the worst, signing those papers, the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever, ever had to do in my life,” Hayden Panettiere said, adding that at the time there was a plan for her to be involved in her daughter’s life again. “I was gonna go work on myself, I was gonna get better, and when I got better, then things could change and she could come to me and I could have my time with her, but that didn’t happen.”
