Hayward Unified names interim superintendent

HAYWARD – The Hayward Unified school board has unanimously chosen Chien Wu-Fernandez to serve as interim superintendent.

The longtime assistant superintendent takes over following the announcement of the departure of Superintendent Matt Wayne, who served in the position for five years. Wayne is leaving the district to become the next superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District starting July 1.

“The board conducted a thorough process to consider all available options for support during this important transition,’’ Board President April Oquenda said in a statement. “We believe that the experience that Mrs. Wu-Fernandez brings, and her familiarity with the district and schools, make her the ideal candidate to step into this critical role.’’

Throughout June, Wayne and Wu-Fernandez will work together to “ensure a smooth transition,” according to Oquenda.

“Stability and continuity are of paramount importance while we search for the next superintendent,’’ Oquenda said. “We look forward to a close partnership with Mrs. Wu-Fernandez over the ensuing months.’’

Wu-Fernandez has been associate superintendent for student and family services for six years. She has been with the district for a total of 17 years, including serving as the director of student services.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve the board and the community,’’ Wu-Fernandez said in a statement. “HUSD is a uniquely superb community of educators and families, and it’s a privilege to be able to do meaningful and important work here.”

The school board has hired McPherson & Jacobson to do a search for the next permanent superintendent. The firm will conduct forums and a survey to get feedback from residents.
