HBO’s Barry Stars on the Final Season: ‘We Knew We Were Going to Mourn It’

HBO is often admired as an organization that respects the decisions made by its creators on stories, to whom it leaves free spaces, and puts quality before quantity. This ethic is cited as one of the reasons behind the quality of the network’s projects. Almost every show on HBO didn’t see more than five seasons. This includes HBO’s hit show Succession, whose final season decision shocked many fans, including lead actress like Sarah Snook and the dark comedy Barry. Both series will make their final run with their fourth seasons.

Bill Hader is the lead and co-creator of a TV series that has already made its way into television history with 9 Primetime Emmys, with a complex story that begins when a former soldier and hitman Barry Berkman finds himself on the theater stage in Los Angeles. While it’s hard for many fans to let go, it’s the right decision for Hader. He told the TVLine, ”After Season 3 and Barry got caught, it kind of seemed like, well, the cat’s out of the bag. It seems like it’s going to probably have to end soon, or it has to become a completely different story. And I didn’t want to do that, so it was just like, ”Well, let’s just make sure it ends.” Hader said.

Sarah Goldberg, who plays Sally Reed, said that she agreed with Hader, and they were very sad, but it was a satisfying and right decision.

”We had an idea about what the arc of this series was going to be, and we knew we were walking toward it. But it wasn’t official until just before we started shooting it, and we got official word, and it was a mixed bag for all of us, it was all the feelings really. It was emotional and sad. We knew we were going to mourn it, and more in this incredible job and these incredible people working together for all these years. But at the same time, the story felt like it was like ending in the right place. And we kind of have to honor that. So that felt very satisfying the story was taking the right time, and so it was jabs, mixed and emotional experience.”

Anthony Carrigan, who plays the gangster Hank, who is trying to find his way as one of the most unique characters in the show, said that he was bummed out when he learned that the series would end with the fourth season, and said that he thought it was a smart decision.

”I was a little bummed out because I love going to work on this show. It’s my favorite thing. I think we end on a really high note, and I think it’s the smart move. You can only paint yourself into a corner so many times before you’re out of paint”

Barry season 4 will premiere Sunday, Apr. 16, on HBO.
