Eddie Hearn was not impressed with Carl Froch’s recent comments about Anthony Joshua and savaged his former fighter by telling him ‘AJ’s well surpassed you’. The former super-middleweight world champion claims that AJ has ‘no real legacy’ and won’t end up in the Hall of Fame when his career is said and done.
Hearn fired back at Froch’s claims by stating that Joshua has surpassed Froch’s own legacy as the Cobra “never had the profile” to make the same impact on the sport. He told Boxing King Media: “Carl Froch says some mad things sometimes, I love Carl Froch, I think he’s great, but I didn’t like what he said.
“AJ may not have had the epic number of battles that Carl Froch has had but the legacy that he leaves in the sport in our country and for the next generation well surpasses anything Carl ever did because Carl never had the profile.
“He’s a warrior, he’s a hall of fame fighter, but you have to respect what AJ has done, he’s a great fighter, he’s one of the great heavyweights of the modern generation and he’s not done yet. We should get behind him.”
This comes after Froch told the Sporting Post: “AJ has had a fantastic career financially, but maybe it niggles him that he’s probably got no real legacy. He’s not in the Hall of Fame, unlike the Cobra!
“He’s not going to go down as an all-time great with the fights he’s had, losing to Ruiz and back-to-back fights with Usyk. What’s he fighting for? He said money, but money is not motivation when you’re fighting, trust me.
“You don’t think about money when you walk to that ring. If you do it’s a bad attitude and you don’t perform, you perform from wanting to be world champion and wanting to perform for yourself and fans to get a legacy, to be a Hall of Famer, you have to be in love with the sport.”
Froch was recently inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the class of 2023 alongside; Timothy Bradley Jr, Rafael Marquez, Alicia Ashley, Laura Serrano, Brad Goodman, Joe Goossen, Brad Jacobs, Seth Abraham and Tim Ryan.
The Nottingham puncher closed out his career in 2014 with a record of 33-2 having held three of the four major sanctioning body belts at super-middleweight during a 12-year stint in the paid ranks.
