Hawaiian shave ice, that delightful mix of cold ice shaved right off the block and doused in fruity syrups, has been somewhat out of reach in the East Bay. We’ve had our share of pop-ups over the years, from Auntie Viv’s, which has been on hiatus since the pandemic, and the newer Always Aloha, from Oahu-born owner Stephanie Iwasaki.
Now, for the first time, there’s a brick and mortar in Brentwood where you can get shave ice whenever the craving hits (and without scrolling through Instagram feeds to chase down mobile businesses). Aloha Ice, which is open from noon to 8 p.m. daily, opened last month in the Shady Willow Plaza at 6271 Lone Tree Way, Suite K, in Brentwood.
Owners Dante and Rachelle Haynes started out as a pop-up as well, traveling around the Bay Area with their shave ice machine. They offer two sizes, small ($5) and regular ($7), and 21 syrups, including four that are sugar-free.
“We received so many wonderful reviews and feedback we decided we wanted to open up a brick and mortar,” she says.
Made in-house using pure cane sugar, the syrups range from classic tropical flavors, like lychee pineapple, mango and guava to cotton candy and gummy bear haupia (haupia is Hawaiian pudding made with coconut cream). For a dollar extra, you can add a scoop of ube or vanilla macadamia nut ice cream. Toppings are 75 cents each and range from azuki beans to popping boba and li hing mui powder.
Aloha Ice also offers its own classic and specialty creations — the Ubelicious, for example, and Cookies ‘n’ Cream Supreme — for $8 and $10. Find more information at the Aloha Ice Instagram page.
