Heinz has its say on whether you should keep ketchup in the fridge

Whether you keep your tomato sauce in the fridge or the cupboard divides families up and down Great Britain.

Along with whether you put jam or cream on your scone or whether you love or hate Marmite, many will feel their own way is undeniably the right one.

But a study of 2,000 Brits found that four in 10 have been getting it wrong. They have been storing their Heinz Tomato Ketchup in the cupboard, and not the fridge.

The research found residents in Sheffield were among the worst offenders. Almost two third (62%) kept their sauce in the cupboard.

The argument, which has seen hot takes on social media from the likes of Cardi B and Victoria Beckham wading into the debate (news flash – they’re both wrong) has been a controversial topic for years, reports NottinghamshireLive.

The research also shows that this is one debate men and women can agree on – though Heinz confirms they are, in fact, both incorrect. The study shows that two fifths of men (41%) and women (41%) are keeping their ketchup in the cupboard.

Olivia Lennon, at Heinz Tomato Ketchup said: “There was only ever one correct answer, and we’re happy to share with Heinz Tomato Ketchup lovers across the UK that our ketchup has to be in the fridge.

“Although we’re aware many Heinz Tomato Ketchup fans have been storing their ketchup in the cupboard, we do recommend refrigeration after opening. This is the best way to maintain the delicious tangy taste of our Heinz Tomato Ketchup that you know and love.”

Heinz Tomato Ketchup has natural acidity, which makes the ketchup shelf-stable. However, once open this can be affected by storage conditions. So, whether you’re dolloping it on your burger, or slathering it on your pizza Heinz always recommends you pop it back in the fridge after use.

It even says so on the label. Under the word “storage” it states: “After opening refrigerate and eat within eight weeks.”

So, that’s that settled then. Keep your cool. Ketchup belongs in the fridge.
