Fans of Netflix series The Witcher were left stunned at the sudden news that lead actor Henry Cavill will depart the show at the end of the upcoming third season. Now, speaking with EW, Cavill’s co-star Anya Chalotra, who plays the sorceress Yennefer in The Witcher, has commented on him leaving the show and being recast with The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth.

“All we knew were the feelings that we have when any season comes to an end. It’s full of pride and love and accomplishment for what we’ve done. So, we stayed in that moment rather than anything else. The news was… yeah, it’s hard to take because he’s a crucial part of the show and we all adore him. So, we’re gonna miss him a lot. I wish him all the best.”

Missing Henry Cavill is no doubt a feeling that will echo throughout The Witcher fanbase, with some viewers having since declared that, to them, season three is the show’s last. Cavill took to social media back in October last year to reveal that he had decided to walk away from The Witcher saying, “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4.”

Cavill revealed that Independence Day: Resurgence star Liam Hemsworth will take over as Geralt, with the actor responding, “As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure.” You can check out some new images of Cavill’s final adventure below…

“As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it,” the official synopsis for season three of The Witcher reads. “Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.”

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has offered further insight into what audiences can expect from The Witcher season three saying, “We really feel like it’s when everything changes in the series.” Not only will things change, season three will also be a much more faithful adaptation of the source material than the previous two outings.

“Time of Contempt is so action packed, but of course not just plot for plot’s sake. It is one of the books that I think has the best character development that is matched with high-stakes action, high-stakes plot moments.”

The Witcher season three will be split into two parts with volume one of The Witcher season three now scheduled to debut on Netflix on June 29. Volume two meanwhile will land on the platform on July 27.
