Conor McGregor: Who will he fight next?

Henry Cejudo has backed up a long-held theory and accused Conor McGregor of having poor cardio as their social media feud continues.

Cejudo criticised UFC president Dana White on social media for his quick dismissal of a potential featherweight title shot against Alexander Volkanovski.

In his dig at White, he appeared to also question why he wasn’t given the same treatment to McGregor which prompted a quick response from the Irish star, branding Cejudo a “fart”.

The American then continued his criticism of McGregor, tweeting : “What do you know about farting? You always run out of gas.”

McGregor has been accused of having poor cardio in the past particularly after his fights against Nate Diaz and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The Irish star punched himself out in the opening round of his clash with Diaz which was a key reason to him tapping out in the second round.

McGregor immediately overhauled his training regime for the rematch which he won on points after suffering a mid-fight slump.

He then duelled with bitter rival Nurmagomedov but ultimately came up short again being submitted in the fourth round which led to further questions surrounding his fitness.

MMA trainer Firas Zahabi publicly explained his theory behind McGregor’s poor cardio.

“It think it’s partly genetic,” Zahabi previously told Joe Rogan during an episode of the JRE MMA Show. “I call it the touch of death.

“He’s got that left hand, it’s the touch of death. That touch of death comes at a cost. How do you have the touch of death? Where does power come from? Number one on the list, number one, is where your muscle is attached to the bone.

“It’s genetic. So, Mike Tyson, he has a powerful left hook not because his coach taught him how to hit a left hook. He could have hit a left hook like that if he had a mediocre trainer.

“McGregor, look at his stats. It’s all round one knockout, round two knockout (using) his fast-twitch, high-leverage left hand. If you take him into deep waters, his fast-twitch muscle fibres cannot metabolise.”

McGregor has since lost three out of his last four fights in the UFC including two consecutive losses to Dustin Poirier.

He is looking to make a successful comeback this year after sliding down the lightweight rankings to ninth position.

However the 33-year-old has demanded that he is handed an immediate title shot on his return and has publicly challenged champion Charles Oliveira.

The Brazilian himself is keen to stage the fight and is “waiting” for an offer to be made official from McGregor’s camp when his recovery is complete.

It seems unlikely that McGregor will be handed this shot with UFC kingpin White placing Justin Gaethje at the front of the queue for a title bid.

If McGregor had been handed the shot, it may have raised questions about White’s special treatment of him ahead of other contenders.

However White has admitted he receives it due to his desire to compete in any fight including multiple weight classes.
