Zoe Snoeks, 33, and husband Joeri Janssen were travelling in Belgium’s Luxembourg province on Tuesday when the tragedy took place.

Snoeks was standing on the cliff’s edge when she lost her footing and plunged into the Ourthe river dozens of metres below, according to the public prosecutor’s office.

“We only left on Sunday in our camper van,” Janssen told Newsflash. “Since the pandemic, it was our little thing to drive across Europe in our van and take beautiful photos.”

They were due to return home that same day but woke up early to “take pictures of the Herou” rock formation, which Janssen ominously described as “great for photos.”

They got to the park before 9 a.m., and while Snoeks was practising her poses on the edge of the cliff, she instructed her husband to look out for their dogs.

“I turned to the dogs and told them to wait,” recalled Janssen. “When I turned back to Zoe, she was no longer there. She had just vanished. It must have happened in less than five seconds.”

He added: “I didn’t see or hear anything. No rustling, no screams or shouts. I looked up and saw only dust.”

Janssen said he called out for her, even though he knew it was hopeless.

“The chasm was several tens of metres deep.”

Due to spotty service, he had to go to a nearby hotel to ask for help. Emergency crews arrived and eventually found the victim. They said she fell at least 30 metres but Janssen believes “it was more like 50.”

It is unclear if local authorities have finished their investigation into Snoeks’ death.

“Taking photos was her passion,” said her husband. “I immediately unlocked her phone and saw that she had taken a photo on the cliff edge, her very last selfie.

“Zoe is looking straight ahead. You can also see the mist and the river where they finally found her body.”
