Here’s a look at Witcher Season 3, the Henry Cavill send-off

Geoff Keighley showed the trailer for the third season of The Witcher TV Show at the Summer Game Fest. We already know this season will mark Henry Cavill’s last time as Geralt, but there’s much more to it than that! Let’s dig in.

Even though it shares the name with one of the most popular series of video games of all time, the third season of The Witcher TV series still won’t have anything to do with the game’s events. Instead, it’ll loosely follow the plot of the second novel of Andrzej Sapkowski’s series, A Time Of Contempt. Season three will accompany the escalation of the conflict between Nilfgaard and Redania, and also show Geralt and Yennefer as they train Criri in the ways of the Witcher.

The trailer begins with Geralt remarking that neutrality sucks, but it works at keeping people alive. This means Geralt will likely have to go against his principles at some point and take a stand to save someone he loves. Though his fate is grim in the source material, we know that the sacrifices Geralt’s about to make won’t cost his life. We know this because the show will keep the character alive even without its beloved main actor — but all these decisions might come at a cost. The trailer also teases a bunch of cool new future additions, such as the villainous Wild Hunt from The Witcher 3. Oh, and it does all that to the remixed tune of a neat Radiohead song.

Troubled waters ahead for The Witcher Season 4

Season three will be split into two parts. The first part comes out on June 29, and the second is targeting July 27. This “multi-part” model was already weird before, but even more so now. Why is Netflix even splitting releases when the second “half” features just three episodes? Further out, the fourth season will return with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia. Can he pull it off?

Those who already miss Henry Cavill can find solace in knowing he’ll produce and star in an Amazon adaptation of Warhammer.
