Drew Barrymore Won’t Host The MTV Movie And TV Awards
The Golden Globe-winning actor and daytime talk show host announced on Thursday that she was backing out of the show, in a move of solidarity with the writers strike.
“I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike,” read a statement Drew shared with Entertainment Tonight.
“Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of their creation. And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait, but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me.”
Drew continued, thanking MTV for the opportunity and sharing her excitement to return in 2024. “I can’t wait to be a part of this next year, when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that allows fans to choose who the awards go to and is truly inclusive.”
Variety reports that there won’t be a replacement for Drew, either. However, you may still see her on the show, as she recorded a number of pre-taped segments before stepping down as host.
The report also said there won’t be a red carpet at the awards this year — but it’s unclear who’s even going anyway, as presenters, nominees, and guests might choose not to appear due to the strike.
If you plan to watch, the show airs on May 7 at 8 p.m. ET.
