We all know that sex is great and orgasms feels incredible but they can often strike at wildly bizarre and inappropriate times.
Plenty of us have experienced strange incidents in our sleep (sleep talking, sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming) but have you ever had an unexpected orgasm in the depth of the night? Completely on your own without any sex or masturbation?
According to Abbas Kanani, a pharmacist from Online Pharmacy, orgasm in sleep is totally normal – and it’s all due to increased blood flow.
“When blood flow increases in the pelvic region during the Rapid Eye Movement phase of the sleep cycle, there is an increase of breathing, heart rate and blood flow throughout the body, which includes the genitals. This area becomes hypersensitive, prompting a spontaneous orgasm which may cause a woman to have vaginal wetness or an orgasm (or both) and a man to ejaculate.” Abbas says it is also common to wake up whilst climaxing.
Research into its causes is limited but some medical professionals think anxiety or excitement may produce more nocturnal orgasms or wet dreams and trigger spontaneous orgasm during sleep. Some researchers also suggest that unfulfilled sexual fantasies/desires whilst awake manifest into erotic dreams and involuntary orgasm in sleep (dreaming about your ex again?).
Dr Zoe Gotts, Consultant Clinical Psychologist at the London Sleep Centre, says nocturnal orgasms can affect women more than men, explaining: “Since a significant part of female orgasm is emotional, sleep can be a conducive environment; during sleep there is a reduction in inhibition and so if paired with a stimulating dream, an orgasm may be triggered.
Whilst some people may welcome nocturnal orgasms, others can find them somewhat inconvenient (especially if they’re disrupting your sleep). So how can you avoid getting off in your sleep? “To manage it you could avoid sleeping on your front,” suggests Abbas. “The position of sleeping on your stomach has been linked to triggering more clitoral stimulation and is associated with increased vivid dreams.” He also suggests orgasming during the day to reduce your chances of having a nocturnal orgasm, as well as avoiding caffeine and taking a cold shower before bed to decrease genital sensitivity.
If you’re enjoying them, then just ride it out.
