Video caught the moment a quick-thinking Maryland crossing guard heroically pushed a middle school student out of the way of a fast-moving car that barreled through a cross walk.
Cpl. Annette Goodyear of the North East Police Department gets hit by the car instead, the hair-raising footage shows.
Goodyear, wearing a bright orange jacket and a hat, can be seen raising her hand at oncoming traffic as a student prepares to cross the street at a crosswalk.
Just as the student crosses the middle of the slick road, a black sedan zooms into view. Goodyear immediately grabs the student and shoves them to the other side of the street out of harm’s way while she’s clipped by the vehicle, video shows.
The driver immediately stops and gets out while Goodyear lays with her back on the ground in pain. The driver and several witnesses rush to help.
Cpl. John Fakner of the North East Police Department told WJZ that the incident happened around 7:30 a.m. on Friday.
Police said Goodyear was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and was released.
“We’re just extremely proud of her actions,” he told WJZ. “It was a split-second reaction that saved a child from potential injury. A job well done.”
According to the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office, the driver was cited for negligent driving, failure to stop at yield sign before entering crosswalk, failure to stop for pedestrian in crosswalk, and driving with an expired registration plate.
