It’s the third vehicle produced by the Swedish electric vehicle company, but it’s the first SUV. Polestar said it marks its entrance into “one of the highest margin and growth segments in the automotive industry, particularly in the United States.” The vehicle will be built in the U.S. and China starting in early 2023, but buyers should be able to order one right after it’s fully revealed in October.

The Polestar 3 will use a dual-motor drivetrain and a battery with a target range of more than 600 kilometres. That’s all the automaker is saying for now, although it hinted that other driveline or battery options may be available after the initial vehicle launches.

The vehicle will eventually offer autonomous highway driving, operated by “the best-in-class” LiDAR sensor from U.S.-based Luminar.

“With this car, we bring the ‘sport’ back to the SUV, staying true to our performance roots,” said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar. “This is a major milestone for our company, one that boosts our growth trajectory and takes us into our next phase.”

Originally the performance division of Volvo, Polestar became a standalone premium electric vehicle manufacturer in 2017. It plans to launch a new car every year for the next three years, starting with the Polestar 3, and intends to have a presence in a minimum of 30 global markets by the end of 2023.

Its first vehicle was the low-volume carbon-fibre-bodied Polestar 1 hybrid, made from 2019 to 2021, followed by the Polestar 2 electric fastback. In 2024, it plans to launch the Polestar 5 four-door GT. The company sold some 29,000 vehicles globally in 2021 and has targeted sales of 290,000 by the end of 2025.
