Drivers have been urged to start using the “Dutch Reach” method to protect other road users, namely cyclists.

By doing this, drivers use their opposite hand to open the car door, in doing so turning their whole body towards the door to see any traffic coming from behind them.

Despite Sir Desmond Swayne’s comments, Emily Cherry, Chief Executive at The Bikeability Trust, praised the changes for the impact they will have on road users.
