Halyna Hutchins is dead, her husband and 9-year-old son are grieving and others from the production of “Rust” have been left traumatized by Alec Baldwin fatally shooting the cinematographer during a rehearsal for a scene for his Western film.
But one thing that seems to matter to Alec and to Hilaria Baldwin, and to their cadre of loyal celebrity friends, is that the controversial couple have crafted a very public love story about their commitment to each other amid the tragedy of a woman’s death.
On social media, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin have posted intense love notes to each other, in which they declare that they remain united in their devotion, even amid “the agony” of their situation, which they see as largely fueled by the critics and “gossips” who don’t value them as caring, authentic but “messy” people.
The notes, posted Thursday night and Friday, follow Baldwin’s hour-long interview with ABC News, during which he was both tearful and defiant as he categorically denied any responsibility or feelings of “guilt” in Hutchins’ Oct. 21 death.
In his social media note, the 63-year-old “30 Rock” star posted a photo of himself hugging one of their six young children. In the caption — tagged @hilariabaldwin, but clearly meant for an audience of millions — Baldwin addressed his wife of nearly 10 years.
“No matter what happens to me. No matter what I suffer. If I win or lose, anything. Anything. No one can take away from me the joy and love you have given me, @hilariabaldwin,” Baldwin wrote.
The Emmy winner also despaired over the world being “choked with fumes of hate.” Given Baldwin’s history of controversy and his current tribulations, this “hate” could be coming from any number of critics: the two crew members suing him for negligence; Donald Trump and other conservatives who abhor his liberal politics; the media that have covered his outbursts of temper, street fights with reporters, and Hilaria Baldwin’s decade-long effort to fake being half-Spanish; or even George Clooney and other Hollywood stars, who have questioned whether Baldwin acted safely when handling the gun that killed Hutchins.
The photo accompanying a lengthy post from Hilaria Baldwin showed her and her husband kissing and with their arms wrapped around each other, possibly at their 2012 wedding. The lifestyle influencer, yoga teacher and former mom podcaster used the note to describe the “horrific loss” to Hutchins’ family but also “the torture” that her husband and their family have suffered.
“‘I am here, I love you, and I will take care of you.’ These were the only words that came to me when we learned Halyna had died,” Hilaria Baldwin wrote dramatically. “That moment, etched in my memory, photographers surrounding you, on the phone with me, documenting your agony. I couldn’t be near you to hug you, our connection over the phone, a visual for the world to see.”
Hilaria Baldwin also praised her husband for doing the interview when attorneys and public relations experts typically tell someone in the midst of an active criminal investigation to keep a low profile.
“You know yourself and wanted to speak,” Hilaria Baldwin said. “I am proud of you. We become scared and crumble as some speak about us, for us, gossip, conspiracies, ALL OF THE DAMN OPINIONS. Everything gets twisted and turned, torn apart, picked at, even invented.”
Hilaria Baldwin then explained to her husband why they have become targets for gossip and “conspiracies,” a likely reference to people regularly critiquing her on Reddit and other social media. She told Baldwin: “We have big hearts and we love deeply. … We are messy, unfiltered, and wear our hearts, naked, on our sleeves.”
“My Alec, I am here to heal any of your pain that I can,” Hilaria Baldwin concluded her note. “I am not going anywhere. Onward to being Alec and Hilaria, messy, emotions strong, but lots and lots of love — until the very end.”
The couple’s love notes come as legal experts have said that Baldwin’s interview with George Stephanopoulos was “a mistake” and could potentially be used against him, especially because he’s also a producer on the film, Yahoo Entertainment reported.
Among other things, Baldwin told Stephanopoulos that he didn’t pull the trigger on the prop gun he was holding when it fired a live round striking and killing Hutchins.
According to authorities, Baldwin was told the gun was safe to handle but they are investigating how a live round ended up in the weapon and on the set when only dummy rounds were supposed to be used.
“Alec Baldwin is clearly devastated by the tragic accidental killing of Ms. Hutchins,” Rachel Fiset, the managing partner of Los Angeles-based Zweiback, Fiset & Coleman, said, according to Yahoo. Fiset said Baldwin came off as sympathetic at times during the interview but it also was clear that he was trying to control the narrative in a way that shifts blame away from him.
“Any statements made on television during an investigation could result in unintended admissions that could be used against him later at trial or could prejudice the prosecutor against him,” Fiset said, according to Yahoo. “If statements relating to facts turn out to be disproved, it will hurt his credibility with law enforcement or at trial.
“His admissions that someone is to be blamed — but not him — could also potentially be used against him later in either a civil or criminal case if it is determined that he had some responsibility for set safety as a producer of the film,” Fiset added.
Former assistant U.S. attorney Neama Rahmani, president and co-founder of Los Angeles-based West Coast Trial Lawyers, also called the interview “a mistake,” saying it was a “calculated public relations move that may backfire.”
“Baldwin says he didn’t pull the trigger, but that doesn’t absolve him from civil and potential criminal liability,” Rahmani explained. “Baldwin’s finger should have been nowhere near the hammer or the trigger, even if we are to believe the gun misfired. Nor should Baldwin ever point a firearm at another human being, even if (Hutchins) told him to and he believed it wasn’t loaded or had blanks.”
Rahmani also said that Baldwin’s statements “can and will be used against him in the civil lawsuits and any potential criminal prosecution.”
The couple’s celebrity friends, including Marilu Henner, Frances Fisher, Debi Mazar and Dina Lohan, have filled their Instagram feeds with heart emojis and proclamations of love, support, prayers and exhortations to “stay strong.”
But many non-celebrities on Twitter have echoed the attorneys’ views that the interview was, at the least, a “calculated” P.R. attempt to garner sympathy.
At least one top Hollywood producer blasted Baldwin on Instagram for his “choreographed dumbshow.” Kurt Sutter, the creator of “Sons of Anarchy,” said he had refrained from publicly commenting on gun safety on film and TV productions and the “Rust” shooting — until Baldwin’s interview.
“But after watching just 10 minutes of that ‘hard hitting’ choreographed dumbshow with Stephanopoulos, it’s clear that Mr. Baldwin is more concerned with his own reputation and legal entanglement than he is about set safety and the victims,” Sutter wrote, using an expletive to tell Baldwin, “You’re not the victim.”
