On Friday, the day after news broke that Alec Baldwin was going to be charged with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of filmmaker Halyna Hutchins, his outspoken wife Hilaria Baldwin stood outside their Manhattan apartment and begged a pack of reporters and photographers surrounding their front entrance to “leave my family in peace.”
In this emotional confrontation, Hilaria Baldwin, 39, added to the drama by sporting a green sweatshirt emblazoned with the word “Empathy” and by holding the youngest of her seven children, an infant daughter, in a front carrier. Even more curious: Hilaria Baldwin’s speech bore hints of the Spanish accent that was at the center of her 2020 Spanish heritage scandal, when she, born and raised in Boston to American parents, often used a Spanish accent in interviews and on social media posts, apparently to give her followers the impression that she was Alec Baldwin’s “Latina” wife.
It sounded like the accent was present from the moment a distressed Hilaria Baldwin turned to face reporters and to defiantly announce, “You’re not going ask questions. I’m going to talk.”

Hilaria Baldwin brought up the fact that she and her 64-year-old husband are parents of seven young children, ages 9 to 4 months. The yoga instructor and podcaster decried the fact that the media has been waiting to photograph her as she brings her children out to load them into a car and to take them to school. In a clipped voice, Hilaria Baldwin said, “You being here (while) we escort them to school and when we come come is not good.”
“Please leave my family in peace and let this all play out, OK?” Hilaria Baldwin said, as she advised the photographers that neither she nor her husband will comment on the decision by New Mexico prosecutors to file criminal charges against him in the 2021 death of Hutchins on the set of the film “Rust.”
Hilaria Baldwin quoted her older children as asking, “‘Mommy, what are these people doing?’ It’s a very hard thing, as a mom, to explain.”
But as Hilaria Baldwin turned to leave, a reporter, totally ignoring her statement, asked her to comment on the charges. Meanwhile, Baldwin was briefly seen Friday morning, hiding his face with envelopes, as he ducked into a midtown Manhattan office building, Fox News reported.
It’s not likely that Hilaria and Alec Baldwin will get relief anytime soon from the media circus camped outside their home. Baldwin is known for his belligerent public statements and for his past scrapes with journalists. Both he and his wife have reputations as celebrities who court attention — until it’s not convenient for them.
It may also be especially difficult for Hilaria Baldwin to garner sympathy for her complaints that her children’s privacy being invaded. She’s been accused in the past of using her children “as props” on Instagram to build her career as a lifestyle influencer. To her 1 million followers, Hilaria Baldwin is known for posting multiple photos and videos of her children on an almost daily basis — sometimes in private family moments.
It’s not known why Hilaria Baldwin sounded like she was reverting to her Spanish accent Friday. Perhaps, it came out because she was under stress. Back in 2021, when she tried to explain away her Spanish identity scandal, she talked about spending time in Spain growing up and claimed that she’s a “multi” who continues to live in “a brilliant fluidity” of cultural identities.
Hilaria Baldwin’s confrontation with reporters came after Santa Fe County District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies announced that Alec Baldwin would be indicted on two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Hutchins, who was a cinematographer on “Rust.” She was killed when a gun Baldwin was using during a rehearsal fired; somehow a live round ended up in the gun.
Through his attorney, Luke Nikas, Baldwin said the charges were “a terrible miscarriage of justice.” Nikas said Baldwin had no reason to believe there was a live bullet in the gun — or anywhere on the movie set. Baldwin said he was assured by the crew that the gun was safe to use and was told by Hutchins to point it in her direction. “He relied on the professionals with whom he worked, who assured him the gun did not have live rounds. We will fight these charges, and we will win.”
Carmack-Altwies said there were a number of factors that went into charging Baldwin, including the fact that, as a producer of “Rust,” he should have been aware of reports of lax safety standards on the set. Baldwin also was the person holding the gun.
“(Baldwin) didn’t check it, he didn’t do any of the things that he was supposed to do to make sure that he was safe or that anyone around him was safe,” Carmack-Altwies said. “And then he pointed the gun at Halyna Hutchins and he pulled the trigger.” An FBI forensics report also countered Baldwin’s claim that he didn’t pull the trigger. “That trigger was pulled,” Carmack-Altwies said.
