King Charles has taken up monarchical duties following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, and he now has a host of new royal residences he can use. Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland is now one of Charles’ official residences and his only one in Northern Ireland.
Where is Hillsborough Castle?
Hillsborough Castle is a grand property in Royal Hillsborough, County Down.
Although it’s known as a castle, Hillsborough is a “late-18th Century Irish Big House”, according to the property’s website.
The property was built for the wealthy Hill family whose name was lent to the surrounding area of Royal Hillsborough.

The late Queen met Ireland’s President Mary McAleese in the Red Room of Hillsborough Castle in 2005.
The moment was significant as it marked the first time a reigning monarch had met the President of Ireland on the island of Ireland.
Charles made his first visit to Hillsborough Castle as King a few days after the Queen died, and he shook hands with the crowds gathered to pay their respects.
Inside, Charles made a speech to guests which included Democratic Unionist Party leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson and Sinn Féin Vice President Michelle O’Neill.

Where are King Charles’ other residences?
For the time being, Charles is believed to have retained Clarence House as his London residence while renovations are ongoing at Buckingham Palace.
Buckingham Palace has long been considered the monarchy’s headquarters in the capital, but for several years now work has been underway to fix the electricity and structure of the historic landmark.
As monarch, Charles can also call Windsor Castle in Berkshire home, with the ancient fortress established by William the Conqueror in the 11th Century.
The Queen’s beloved Balmoral Castle, where she died aged 96, has likely passed to Charles as her eldest child and successor as monarch.
Sandringham House in Norfolk is also a private royal residence, and it is expected Charles and the Royal Family will spend Christmas there this year as is traditional.
Charles also owned Highgrove House in Gloucestershire, but as the residence is a Duchy of Cornwall property it is now thought to be under the control of Prince William.
Charles also owns Birkhall in Scotland, the former home of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.
