His family’s football bond carried Avery Young to Rutgers. Now it may take him all the way to the NFL

Football runs in Avery Young’s blood.

His father, Anthony, was a standout at Temple who played in the NFL. His older brother, Jordan, and younger brother, Aaron, are fellow Division I football players.

“We played all the time growing up,” Avery recalled of his childhood in Coatesville, Pa. “Outside in the front yard, we had plastic fake helmets decorated with face masks. It’s something we always did, constantly emulating our favorite players.”

Now Avery, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound fourth-year junior at Rutgers and bona fide NFL draft prospect, is hoping to continue the family legacy in the pros. Anthony was a third-round pick of the Colts in 1985 who played in 14 games as a rookie before suffering a career-ending neck injury the following year. Avery is following in his father’s footsteps most closely as a defensive back; Jordan, a senior, plays linebacker at Old Dominion and Aaron is a sophomore running back at Rutgers.
