iHeartMedia and ALT-FM 98.7’s annual ALTer Ego Fest will land back at Kia Forum in Inglewood on Jan. 14 and feature an array of popular alternative acts.
Hosted by the station’s “The Woody Show” morning crew, the 2023 edition of the radio fest includes Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and Los Angeles natives the Red Hot Chili Peppers, along with Muse, Fall Out Boy, Jack White and more. Back in 2022, the lineup featured Imagine Dragons, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Twenty One Pilots, All Time Low, Willow, Måneskin and special surprise guest Avril Lavigne. Tickets sold out quickly. However, there are still seats left for this year going for $98-$700 at Ticketmaster.com.
With a short, yet robust lineup ready to take the stage in 2023, here’s a list of the radio hits we’re hoping to hear as these artists curate the ultimate live playlist.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Los Angeles-based rock band will officially celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2023 and have a staggering amount of chart-topping hits fans have grown to love. The quartet released two records in 2022, “Unlimited Love and “Return of the Dream Canteen,” both garnering hits like “Black Summer,” “These Are the Ways” and “Tippa My Tongue.”
While the new stuff is getting a fair amount of radio play, we’d like to hear a hit like 1991’s “Give It Away,” especially at a hometown show.
Jack White
Rocker Jack White had a long and busy 2022. The former White Stripes songwriter and guitarist released two solo records last year including the rock-centric “Fear of the Dawn” in April and the acoustic “Entering Heaven Alive” in June and toured in North American, Europe and Asia. Hopefully, for those attending ALTer Ego, his 2014 hit, “Lazaretto” will be a top contender in his shortened setlist. Though it’s likely a White Stripes hit like “Icky Thump” could beat that out if he’s shooting for fan-favorites and new songs like “Taking Me Back” and “Fear of the Dawn” were popular on his current tour setlists, too.
Muse
The English rock trio has always been keen on stretching musical boundaries and presenting over-the-top visuals for live sets. That will undoubtedly be no different at ALTer Ego. While we’d hope for hits like “Drones,” “Psycho” or “Supermassive Black Hole,” the band released a ripping new rock album, “Will of the People,” last year, so we’re looking to be hit with “Kill or Be Killed” or “Won’t Stand Down.”
Fall Out Boy
After enduring the twice postponed Hella Mega Tour that found the band playing stadiums with Green Day and Weezer in 2021-2022, Fall Out Boy has only, so far, booked the ALTer Ego show for 2023. While the band hasn’t put out a new album in five years, it did drop the single “Dear Future Self (Hands Up)” in 2019. The Chicago punk rock group will probably stick to the basics and give fans what they want, which will be hits like “Sugar, We’re Going Down” and “Dance Dance.”
Phoenix
The French group dropped a brand new album, “Alpha Zulu,” last year with title track as its lead single as well as “Tonight” and “Winter Solstice,” which will likely land on its ALTer Ego setlist. But the band has six other full-length albums in its melodic indie-synth repertoire that has spawned hits like “Lisztomania” and “1901,” both off its 2009 album “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix,” which have remained constants within the band’s touring sets.
CHVRCHES
The Scottish synth-heavy pop trio has churned out hits since its rise to indie stardom in 2013. With the release of the group’s 2021 record “Screen Violence” and hits “He Said She Said” and “Good Girls,” fans can only hope that those songs sit along fan-favorites like its 2012 debut single, “The Mother We share.”
Beach Weather
After announcing an indefinite hiatus early in 2021, the indie-rock trio decided to make a quick return after finding themselves going viral via Tik Tok. The band is mainly known for its 2016 EPs, “Chit Chat” and “What A Drag,” both of which ultimately led to the rapid social media rise and a cult following. We’ll probably get a few of the early tracks, but the focus will probably be on newer cuts like “Sex, Drugs, Etc.” and “Unlovable.”
Rosa Linn
It was only a few years ago that Rosa Linn found herself casually writing songs in her spare time. Now, she’s hit global success with the viral song “Snap,” thanks to Tik Tok and is expected to support Ed Sheeran on his 2023 North American tour. With only a few singles under the Armenian singer-songwriter’s belt, it only seems fitting that her major hit and even a few new tracks will be in session.
