Hogwarts Legacy sold 12 million copies and drove $850 million in revenue across its first two weeks on sale, Warner Bros. Games has announced. This makes it the biggest launch ever for Warner Bros. Games, despite controversy surrounding author JK Rowling.
For comparison, Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II earned $1 billion in retail sales over its first 10 days.
Additionally, WB Games confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy set a record for Twitch, reaching 1.28 million peak concurrent viewers at launch. This was the most in Twitch’s history for a single-player game.
What’s more, WB Games said Hogwarts Legacy players have collectively logged 280 million hours in the game so far.
This is just the start for Hogwarts Legacy, as the game will expand to PS4 and Xbox One in April, and then Nintendo Switch in July.
Hogwarts Legacy has generated a lot of criticism, controversy, and debate. One outlet, GamesHub, posted an editorial about Rowling and her comments instead of a review.
Players begin their magical career as a fifth-year student coming to Hogwarts in the 1890s. In addition to exploring the castle and learning spells, players venture beyond the castle walls.
Those hoping that Hogwarts Legacy adds Quidditch in a future expansion may be out of luck, as the developer said it has no plans for DLC, at least not right now.
Hogwarts Legacy is developed by Avalanche Software, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
