Hold the Pink Phone, Could There Actually Be a ‘Barbie 2′?

Can you feel it? Can you feel the Kenergy and Barbie-mania sweeping the globe? Greta Gerwig’s film, which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has inspired a moviegoing celebration with so, so much pink. What if it also inspires a sequel? Here’s what we know about whether or not there will be a Barbie 2, or maybe another film set in Gerwig’s fantasy Barbieland. The movie is doing really well already, so it could happen.

I don’t want to spoil this movie if you haven’t already seen it. But in order to speculate on what could happen in Barbie 2 or even who could be in Barbie 2, I might tread lightly into spoiler territory. (Also… if you haven’t seen Barbie yet, why are you here? Are you only interested in movies if you know for a fact that they will or won’t have sequels? That’s cool to feel passionate about something, but I encourage you to branch out!)

Give it to me straight, Dr. Barbie: Is there going to be a Barbie 2?

We don’t know yet! When asked, Gerwig tends to give noncommital answers about how it would be exciting but she didn’t have a sequel in mind while making Barbie. Robbie too. “It could go a million different directions from this point,” Robbie told TIME. “But I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.” I kind of agree. Sometimes it’s fun to watch a Part 1 of 2, and sometimes you just want to watch a story where the end is, like, the end!

What would Barbie 2 be about? Who would be in it?

I’m not giving away what happens in Barbie, but there are definitely other stories you could tell with those characters. There are so many fun characters to explore in the world Gerwig imagined. Again, without giving too much away, I don’t think Robbie’s character would return for a sequel. I suppose she could in theory, but it feels more likely that a Barbie 2 would star one of the other Barbies. Maybe they could pull in even more cast members from Sex Education!

There is a rumor about a Ken spin-off starring Ryan Gosling. As much as I loved Gosling in the role, I don’t want that! The whole point is that he’s not the main character! Honestly, I’m hoping that rumor is fake and came from a joke in the movie… IYKYK.

When would Barbie 2 come out?

That’s a question for Warner Brothers and the AMPTP, not me! As of the movie’s release, SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are on strike. We won’t even have a timeline until studios and producers reach a fair deal with the writers and actors who make the movies we love. So if a sequel happens, it’ll be a long ways off. Sorry, Barbies!
