Apparently I’m not the only one obsessed with donuts. People love the sweet (and sometimes savory) treats so much that, although holidays like Thanksgiving and even Christmas are only celebrated once a year, there are actually two National Donut Days annually.
Today is one of those days (the other one is in November) and I’m all over it. My dream would have been to head to Sanderling Resort in the Outer Banks, North Carolina for The Sweet Escape, a limited time experience created in conjunction with Duck Donuts. Available through the end of June (hey, I’m all for National Donut Month), this special package gives you the opportunity to stay in a beautiful Junior Ocean Suite decorated in donut décor, along with a dedicated donut concierge, donut swag, a behind-the-scenes tour of the original Duck Donuts and, of course, lots and lots of Duck Donuts including a custom assortment called “The Sandy Duck.” It sounds like heaven.
I’m hoping they will offer this again in November because I’m devastated that I can’t get there this month. Instead, I will be drowning my sorrows in some of my favorite donuts from around the country. Because donut makers are all about making people happy, they’ve made it easier than ever to have the ones you fell in love with on some trip delivered right to your door, wherever you live.
Here are some of my favorites. Order a dozen or two and make every day a donut day. Trust me, these are worth celebrating.
This Manhattan institution has been keeping New Yorkers happy – a feat in itself – 24/7 for more than half a century. Their legendary croissant donuts are so delicious, I have no words. You just have to try them yourself. The S’mores is a work of art, the Maple-Glazed with Bacon is breakfast of champions and the purist’s Maple-Glazed is just perfection.
Renowned for its signature Honey-Dip, it should come as no surprise that this iconic Massachusetts donut shop also makes a mean Boston Cream. What started out as a mom and pop shop back in 1955 is now an award-winning New England legend turning out chef-driven masterpieces. Donut staples like Jelly, Chocolate Glazed and Classic Plain are blissfully simple – and simply blissful.
This family-owned Los Angeles donut shop just may deserve a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. Earning awards since it opened in 1955, the old-school treats are proof that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Their signature Buttermilk Bar has made generations of donut lovers happy and is joined by Twists and Classics in flavors from Glazed and Tiger Tails to Blueberry Cake and Cinnamon Apple Raised. Be glad you don’t live nearby because you wouldn’t be able to resist a daily visit.
Founded in Bed-Stuy – and reason enough to move to Brooklyn before their donuts became available for nationwide delivery – Dough has made a national name for itself with its gigantic brioche-based creations. Soft and fluffy on the inside, they’re Goldilocks-crisp on the outside. Try a unique combo like Cafe au Lait with Pecan Streusel or Blueberry Lemon with Oat Crumble or keep it monodonutic with Vanilla Glazed with Vanilla Crumbs or Chocolate Glazed with Chocolate Crumbs. Whatever you choose, they’ll ensure you go big at home.
Over the past decade, Federal has become a Philadelphia must-visit, thanks to its outstanding freshly-fried cake donuts – and outstanding is where you’ll find fans lined up every single day. Its founders include the James Beard Award winning restaurateurs behind the city’s highly-acclaimed Zahav so you know these donuts are special. It seems appropriate that Federal’s logo is a rooster because, whether you choose Fancy flavors like French Toast and Cereal Glaze or Classics like Old Fashioned Glazed or Dark Chocolate Glazed, these donuts are worth crowing about.
Owner and cake artist, Diane Reck, personally creates these yummy donuts in her North Carolina home bakery, and they’re pure comfort food, tasting like they were lovingly baked just for you. Treat yourself to fruity flavors like Apple Cider, Lemon Poppy Seed, Brown Sugar Buttermilk Banana or get your chocolate fix with Cookies & Cream or Chocolate Fudge.
