A space should always reflect positivity and calmness when we enter it and with our hectic schedules, it is our home that provide us the peace and warmth but the very spirit of a calming home comes from a truly calming bedroom space where minimalism, by nature, brings that whiff of calmness into a space. Minimalist bedrooms talk about this spirit with softer, ethereal palettes and silhouettes that pull together a relaxing visual, effortlessly.
It is where the details stay on the lighter side and make every hint of texture meaningful, with a little story to tell. The space calls for a much essential warmth in everything from the decor to the lighting to create an ambience that is calm, cozy and characterful.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Ankit and Anand Ojha, Principal Designers of Anand Atelier Associate, recommended a few tips which we can apply in our spaces to make it appear calmer and airier:
- EMBRACE THE SPACE
The combination of colours we choose have a huge impact on our space. The right colors can instantly lift our moods, making us feel relaxed and calm, or cheerful and excited. For example, green, blues, and earthy tones are naturally soothing colours. The palette stays very close to hues you’d find in nature.
2. WORK OF ART
Bedrooms are the most intimate space of the house, lift up the spirit and create a vibe with a colourful painting or a piece of art that is contrasting to the palette of the bedroom. Indulge on a painting with bright colours and exciting forms. In recent years wallpapers have come up with so many patterns and textures, the right choice of wallpaper can instantly bring life to the space. A beautiful range of wallpaper is available in the market to choose from.
3. LAYER IT WITH LIGHTS
A space feels complete with the right combination of lights. Right lighting layout can totally transform the space. Use additional lighting throughout your room to offer some extra warmth in addition to letting natural light come in via the windows. Choose lighting fixtures that don’t occupy valuable space, such as string lights, wall sconces, or pendant lighting, if you don’t have enough place for floor and table lamps.
4. CURVED FURNITURE
Curved furniture adds softness to the space, makes it more welcoming. Curved furniture make a space aesthetically pleasing as well as make a space feel safe, warm, and comforting.
Bringing her expertise to the same, Interior Designer Punam Kalra, Creative Director of I’m the Centre for Applied Arts, suggested how you can create such a mininalist bedroom space:
- Go for warm neutral palettes
Neutral palettes speak for minimalism in the bigger picture. Choosing muted colours makes the space feel harmonious both by look and feel. They also enhance the effect of daylight entering the bedroom and make the space feel larger, allowing a more breatheable space. Pick warm undertones like Alabaster, Beige, Taupe, Khaki, Blush Pink and more that leave a soothing effect on the eyes. Try these shades as paint on walls, furniture finishes and woven details to keep these colours true to their nature–unrefined and calm. You can also go with the trending all-white interior themes, to make your bedroom turn into a serene scene.
2. One kind of design
The compositions in an interior has a lot to say about the “calming effect”. Having balanced compositions with similar looking or identical pairs of furniture and decor will give a more minimalist look to the room as it follows a linear or select design language –you can keep the bed unit as the centre and introduce symmetric side tables on either side and hang overhead lights to complete the same. Try including geometric pieces like orb pendants, linear consoles, square artworks, hexagonal mirrors and more to make the balance obvious to the naked eye. You can also replicate the symmetry in the patterns and textures like in a channel tufted headboard or a chevron-panelled accent wall to create a well coordinated space. Its essentially keeping to a single design language such that variations don’t create a sensory overload.
3. Declutter and bring in the green pockets
A minimalist ambience is as sensorial as it is visual. Bringing in some fresh greens as an essential part of the interior improves the mood of the space and keeps the stress levels at bay. Declutter the space from heavy pieces that tend to overwhelm, keeping them to a bare minimum and Include a statement houseplant like peace lily or golden pothos by your bedside or line up a few bonsai plants by the window to fill the space with fresh air. Give up on elaborate florals and lean towards leafy greens, preferably with pruned bushes, for a sanctiful effect. Choose from a range of soft ceramics to textural baskets to accommodate these plants in tasteful aesthetic. You can also beautify the regular planters with contemporary stands in trending geometric silhouettes and metal legs, to make your bedroom look all naturophilic.
4. Layer with seamless fabrics
Minimal spaces need very subtle layering that is completely refined and almost flat. Use interior fabrics with seamless look to bring this effect–get your hands on combed cotton, fine linen, premium suede etc. to give a pristine look to the space. Give neat, trimmed finishes to these materials to put up a truly minimalist face. Get this mood board live on textile layers of furniture upholstery, throw pillows, rugs, curtains and more that take the back seat in minimal interiors. You can also go bold with floor-to-ceiling curtains that are neatly tucked in a window pelmet, or even better, upgrade them with smart operation and user controls. Such a smooth flow of function and aesthetics together brings a calming vibe, especially in the intimate spaces like the bedrooms.
5. Try monochrome textures
Minimal styles are not always about minimal finishes. It also has room for some character from the textures. One way in which the differ from their role in other styles is that minimalist textures are often mellow and laid-back–you can try this look by including material palettes with monochromatic textures like chenille or velvet that come in single colour–without duo-tone variants. You can also try brushed concrete finishes on the wall, woven rattan panels on the closets, grained leather upholstery on the headboards, white-washed brick on the backdrops and more that give a character to the space without being overwhelming. Having a single color statement also exudes a sense of uniformity in the space, that is often found relaxing.
6. Opt for curved statements
Furniture and decor with soft-curved silhouettes and smooth profiles give a natural aura of calmness and peace in a space. You can bring that idea in by including neotenic or nordic styles in the bedroom interior–blob chairs, bean bags, rollable poufs and more speak for the neotenic side while round pedestal tables, cone pendants, arched closets and more speak for the nordic side. You can also invest in hooded collections that express a cozy, introverted appeal–caged luminaires, bubble swings, papasan chairs and more can become a part of the bedroom that opens up more room for relaxation. The key is to create a statement without a sensory overload.
