Homeowner ‘speechless’ to discover hidden pool in his back garden

A man who bought a former hoarder’s home for only $19,000 was shocked to discover that the unruly bog at the bottom of his garden was actually a $150,000 swimming pool.

John Reynolds is a nurse from Texas who bought a cheap three-bedroom home in order to fix it up and resell it.

The house was so cheap due to the previous owner being a hoarder that had littered the home with junk and also had 20 feral cats roaming the property.

John spent months tidying up the home but was shocked when his neighbour phoned him after a heavy storm and said the rain had washed away his untidy garden to reveal a swimming pool.

He described the moment, and said: “I said ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about, I don’t have a pool’, and she said ‘yes, you do.”

John has previously delayed a closer inspection of the overgrown garden as he was focused on repairing the home.

He admitted he had been puzzled why the garden appeared to have a bog in it despite Texas previously having a dry weather spell.

However, the storm revealed that John was the owner of a 32x17ft swimming pool, and John said he could not believe his luck.

He said: “It feels like I’ve stumbled across a winning lottery ticket. Never in a million years when I bought the property did I think I would be swimming in my own pool.”

It took John 11 months to restore the swimming pool, as it was filled with junk, furniture and even car parts.

He said: “I thought ‘whether I live here or sell the house, I can’t leave it like this’.

John revealed he spent $9,500 to restore the pool, but that building such a large swimming pool from scratch would cost him around $150,000.

He was thankful that there were no cracks in the pool, making it restoring it easier than it could have been despite how much rubbish the pool for filled with.

Discovering this hidden treasure tucked away in his backyard has brought the property value up, and the $19,000 home is now worth $210,000.

John revealed that he now happily spends a lot of time in the pool, and has decided to live in the home rather than sell it on.

John said: “I bought it as a bit of an investment with the intention to do it up and sell it on, but it has yielded so many surprises I don’t know if I can let it go.

“My friends and I are in it every day for hours on end now. You couldn’t wish to find a bigger reward in your back garden.”
