Honda’s 2023 Civic Type R will cost over $50k in Canada

That sounds like a lot, but it’s technically quite a bit cheaper than what they’ll pay in the States

Honda Canada has just released pricing for its all-new Civic Type R and, at $50,050 — $51,830 in Quebec, where local legislation requires that dealers include destinations charges — it isn’t exactly inexpensive. Absent any “special editions” — and there most definitely won’t be an SE this year, says Honda Canada — that makes the Type R the most expensive Civic in the land.

And, just so you know, our Canadian Type Rs are comparatively cheap compared with U.S. versions, whose US$42,895 MSRP translates into almost CDN$58-grand at today’s exchange rates.

Besides, as Steve Hui, Honda Canada’s assistant vice-resident, says, “The all-new Type R embodies the very best in Honda engineering while embracing our challenging spirit and leveraging years of proven racing technology.” For those needing reminding, ‘racing’ technology means Honda’s trusty K20C1 2.0-litre Turbo four grinds out 315 horsepower (nine more than previously) and an even more impressive 310 foot-pounds of torque (up 15 lb-ft from the 2021 model) thanks to recalibrated intake and exhaust system as well as a revised turbocharger.

Wider-than-ever Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires — rear 265/30R19s, and 245/30R19s in the front — ride on 19-inch wheels, and two-piece front brake rotors reduce weight and improve cooling during hard running. You also no longer need a smartphone (and app) to display lap times and other performance data, as it’s now accessible through the infotainment screen.

The end result, says Honda, is a car that set a new all-time lap record for front-wheel-drive production cars around Japan’s famed Suzuka Formula One racetrack. So maybe it is worth the $50-large. Oh, and by the way, the new Type R’s overall fuel economy is 9.7 L/100 km, some 0.1 L/100 km more than the outgoing model — as if anyone cares!
