Charlotte Hornets general manager Mitch Kupchak gave an uncomfortable answer when asked about his team’s decision to draft Brandon Miller with the No. 2 overall pick in last night’s draft.
Kupchak’s answer was winding and borderline unintelligible. He spoke about Miller’s age as a one-and-done freshman, then backed off.
“I would say he is a freshman right? He’s a little bit, I’d say younger than— Excuse me, I wouldn’t say younger,” Kupchak said. “I better not even go in that direction, actually. I’ll just back off.”

There’s no question that Miller is one of the top prospects in this year’s draft class, but many Hornets fans hoped that the team would draft G-League star Scoot Henderson. Perhaps Kupchak was nervous as he prepared to face the backlash from this decision.
“Obviously, there were two players that were heavily considered at that position. Brandon was the favorite all along,” Kupchak added. “It wasn’t the easiest decision, but Brandon was our favorite all along. A lot of spirited discussion the last three or four days, which I welcome, and it’s good for the basketball department to discuss pros and cons.”
Miller, 20, averaged 18.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in his one season with the Alabama Crimson Tide. The 6-foot-9 forward will provide some immediate wing scoring alongside star point guard LaMelo Ball.
