The UN nuclear watchdog has warned the safety of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia power plant could be compromised after fresh rounds of shelling by Russian forces. Ukrainian nuclear operator Energoatom said on Telegram a strike by Russian “terrorists” damaged a power line at the facility, meaning emergency generators were briefly activated. Rafael Grossi, director of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said: “The situation is still getting worse and we can’t wait for something regrettable to happen.” It comes after a city council official reported the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, close to the occupied nuclear plant, was shelled early Thursday.
Zaporizhzhia City Council Secretary Anatoliy Kurtiev said on Telegram that “civil infrastructure has been destroyed” and that “there are casualties.” The number of casualities is not yet known.
Claims have been made of five explosions by both pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian media, however, this has not been independently verified.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, located in the southeast of Ukraine, has been occupied by Russian forces since March.
A recent UN mission to the plant proved largely ineffective, with Russian military still in control of Europe’s biggest nuclear plant.
