If you’ve ever spent time in New York City, often dubbed the city that never sleeps, you know there’s no shortage of noise. From its familiar cacophony of blaring horns, sirens, garbage trucks, jack hammers and the hum-drum of construction, Manhattan can certainly be a tricky place to catch your z’s. This rings especially true for weary business travelers and long-haul visitors. And while the scientific consensus says that most of us require 7-9 hours of sleep, staying at a hotel can often reek havoc on our circadian rhythms, prompting restless nights —and unproductive days.
Enter Equinox Hotels.
The Art + Science of Sleep
In March, the ultra-modern brand debuted their Art + Science of Sleep in New York City’s Hudson Yards. As they like to say: It all starts in the room. Thanks to double-paned windows and black-out curtains, one swipe of in-room iPads transforms your room’s hushed, cream-toned space into a tranquil sound-and-light-proof sleep chamber. And, to maintain one’s optimal sleeping temperature (hovering around 66 degrees), all-natural, spring-free mattresses come equipped with temperature-regulating fibers (and should your sleepmate be known to steal the covers, beds also have separate duvets).
Meanwhile, away from the trappings of subpar, nutrient-lacking minibars, you’ll find an array of healthy nibbles, sleep-inducing herbal teas, tinctures (CBD) and custom eye masks (you can also sip on cocktails by the popular West Village eatery Via Carota). Inside spacious showers, delight your senses with an herbal evening cleanser with tangerine, chamomile and Tasmanian pepper compliments of Grown Alchemist.
Meanwhile, a ‘Sleep Well’ dining menu offers nourishing bone broth and a calming charcoal latte (known to aid in natural melatonin production). Still tossing? An AM + PM Ritual Program, also on the iPad, has a bevy of breathwork techniques to unwind before slumber; and wake up feeling energized.
A State-of-the Art Spa and Fitness
Downstairs, a cutting-edge spa offers an extensive menu to induce proper relaxation. Resting on a state-of-the-art Wave Table, a ‘Quantum Harmonics’ session, grants visitors 3 hours of sleep in a 30-minute power nap-like session (using noise-canceling headphones). A few doors down, cryotherapy sessions are ideal to increase circulation and reduce inflammation; while an infrared sauna helps detoxify and improve blood flow. For sore muscles, guests can access cortisol-releasing hot and cold plunges; alongside Iccone Robodern’s state-of-the-art lymphatic drainage massages to remove toxins and relieve tension. That’s not all. Offered in a womb-like “pod” with expansives views of the Hudson River, a special NutriDrips Sleep IV blends key nutrients like magnesium, glycine, taurine (with a B-Complex and vitamin C boost) to help recharge your batteries.
For longer stays, guests can also add-on Tier Tier X Training (i.e., health assessment, sleep coaching, personal training) and drop by the Equinox Fitness Club for a dip in the indoor saltwater lap pool; alongside a plethora of yoga, cycling, strength training and Pilates classes.
Healthy, Vegetable-Foward Fare
And to eat, Electric Lemon, from restaurateur Stephen Starr and executive chef Kyle Knoll, features a morning beauty bowl with beet yogurt and bee pollen; healthful lunch salads and for dinner, an artful cauliflower flatbread and a delicious Contramar-inspired red snapper for two.
While Manhattan remains a frenetic, fast-paced and buzzy city, Equinox Hotels is doing it’s part to help visitors renew, rejuvenate and most importantly, sleep well in the city that never sleeps.
