It wasn’t only Spider-Man who was swinging during a Perth showing of Sony’s new big-screen blockbuster.
Tom Holland’s latest turn as the web-slinging superhero hit screens in Australia Thursday night.
But many who had settled in for the highly anticipated flick No Way Home had their night severely interrupted, with a Perth showing marred by “terrifying” violence.
Vision captured at Hoyts Karrinyup on Thursday showed four security guards working to pull a cinema-goer from his seat as those not involved look on.
Later in the clip, a large huddle is shown watching as two other cinema villains square up.
At one point, a person in a black shirt and white cap launches a forearms into the neck of someone who isn’t even facing him.
A moviegoer told PerthNow the film started at 6pm, but didn’t finish until 10pm – about an hour and a half later than scheduled – because of all the commotion.
“It was a wild night,” they said.
They explained a group of young men were playing loud videos on their phone during the movie, and when asked to stop, they started throwing water bottles at patrons.
Security was called, and that’s when the fight broke out.
“What you see in the video is everyone trying to keep the group (of young men) out of the cinema,” they said.
They added that Hoyts staff offered two free tickets to patrons for their trouble, and were “really really helpful” in making sure everyone was safe.
With vision having found its way online, people were quick to voice their disapproval.
“Is that for real. How pathetic is that,” one person fumed on Facebook.
Another described it as “terrible”, saying violence spilled out into the outdoor area.
“Was so absolutely disgusting and so scary,” they said.
A spokesperson for Hoyts confirmed those involved in the ugly incident were kicked out.
“We are aware of a physical altercation at our Hoyts Karrinyup site (Thursday) evening,” a spokesperson said.
“Security was called and the guests involved in the altercation were escorted from the premises.”
The spokesperson added that this type of behaviour is unacceptable.
“HOYTS condemns any inappropriate behaviour across all cinemas, and we will continue to work with the relevant authorities on the matter,” they said.
WA Police told PerthNow that a disturbance report was made about 7.45pm Thursday.
Police spoke to a number of people, with two 19-year-olds taken into custody for unrelated matters.
“Inquiries into the disturbance are continuing,” a spokeswoman said.
Meanwhile the latest instalment of Spider-Man had a bumper opening day at the Aussie box office, raking in a record breaking $8.72 million.
