How to defrost your car windscreen fast: Why a raw onion could be the key

0

As temperatures are set to plummet below 0, and snow on the way later this week, your car may well freeze over. If you don’t want to spend ages de-icing, why not try these four hacks to prevent ice from forming on your windscreen and windows using common household items – one even involves a raw onion.

There’s nothing more annoying than leaving your house in a hurry only to find your car iced over.

But with some handy hacks, you can make your own homemade de-icer, and save precious time in the morning.

Whatever you do, don’t panic and go for a pan of boiling water.

This is incredibly risky, as the sudden change in temperature could cause your windscreen to shatter.

You should never, ever, try to de-ice glass with boiling water.

This includes putting warm water in a plastic bag and moving it across your windscreen; you run the same risks.

How to prevent your car from icing up the night before

If you catch the weather forecast and you know it’s going to be a frosty night or morning, you can actually take steps to prevent your windscreen icing up.

This way, you won’t lose any time having to remove ice in the morning before you head off.

Here are four tips to avoid your car icing up:

1 – Park facing the east

This really depends on how much sunlight you get, and what time you leave the house in the morning, but as the sun rises in the east, it can melt away the ice on your windscreen for you.

4 – Use a windshield cover

You can buy a windshield cover and rest it on your car under the windscreen wipers overnight to prevent frost settling on your car.

If you haven’t got a windshield cover, you can make a makeshift one using items from your house – such as an old shower curtain or blankets.

How to make a homemade de-icer

However, if you wake up to an iced-up motor, here are some homemade de-icers you can try.

If you don’t have any de-icer handy, or you simply prefer to create a natural remedy rather than shell out for expensive sprays, here’s five different ways to make your own de-icer.

1 – Rubbing alcohol and water

Mix two parts of rubbing alcohol to one part of water and put the solution in a spray bottle.

Spray the solution across the windscreen and the ice should simply melt away.

2 – Salt and water

Mix one tablespoon of salt into about a pint of water and stir until the salt has dissolved.

Apply this mix across your windscreen and wait for the ice to dissolve.

If you’re really in a hurry, you can use a plastic scraper to speed this along, but be careful: any larger grains of salt could scratch the windscreen, so go gently.

3 – Vodka

You might not want to pour away a bottle of vodka on your car, but if you’re really desperate this will work.

There’s a high enough alcohol content in most vodkas to melt away ice.
