Sonic is well known for running around at the speed of sound, so in 2001 it made sense for Sega to look into in-game marketing for the blue blur’s kicks. In Sonic Adventure 2, the hedgehog traded in his trademark red sneakers for Soap-branded shoes. They provided a unique look for Sonic, who used them to jet around zones and grind rails. Sonic Frontiers is out now, and Sega is allowing players to claim the Soap shoes as DLC for free — but you have to sign up for a newsletter first.
If you want to claim your own Soap shoes in Sonic Frontiers, the instructions are simple. All you need to do is navigate to the game’s website and scroll down until you see a newsletter subscription button. Signing up will get you the shoes to strap onto Sonic in his latest adventure. It is easy, and you should be able to cancel the newsletter if it’s not something you want in your inbox. There is a time limit, however. You’ll need to claim the DLC before January 31, 2023. Otherwise, you’ll have to kiss those kicks goodbye.
Sonic’s Soap sneakers made quite the splash in Sonic Adventure 2. I recall there was an impressive marketing effort for them, in and around the game. While playing Sonic Adventure 2, you’d zip past benches and billboards with the Soap logo. There was also a massive Soap blimp floating around, just in case you weren’t influenced enough. My young mind at the time was more interested in the Chaos in Space 2 film, truth be told.
Soap shoes come to Sonic Frontiers
Of course, if you’re not interested in grabbing the Soap shoes DLC, Sonic Frontiers is still fine enough without. Sonic’s latest 3D adventure has arrived, and seems to be doing well for the most part. The game currently boasts a 72 rating on MetaCritic for the PlayStation 5. And that’s honestly respectable, given how bad we’ve seen Sonic games in the past.
Sonic’s classic shoes might be enough. But for you nostalgia hounds, having the option to strap on his shoes from Sonic Adventure 2 is pretty ‘way past cool.’ It might not make the game any better, but it looks like a fun way to celebrate Sonic’s past and present all at once.
