How to help teenagers struggling with mental health — FT readers respond

Avoidant responses to things that make some young people stressed and anxious, like exams and public speaking, are likely to be disastrous for them and their development. When I was in high school, in the late 1990s, so not that long ago, the idea of exempting kids from something entirely normal because they found it irrationally or disproportionately distressing would have seemed so ridiculous it was never considered. The problem was seen to be the response, not the task: fear was to be faced and conquered.

Turning natural emotional states into self-diagnosable conditions is driving the malaise.

The prevailing view increasingly seems to be that if someone is not happy or, at least, calmly content all the time, there is something wrong with the environment around them. But, in reality, only the most dull, limited and dispiriting life will ever shield someone from the ups and downs of the human condition.
