“Individuals who exercise a great deal may find their fillers or botox break down a little quicker than others, too.”
Of course, that should in no way impact your healthy lifestyle or the frequency in which you exercise, as we fully condone staying active. It’s just something that can be useful to know.
In terms of other things that can affect your injectables, @theaestheticsdocto Dr. Ahmed El Muntasar says the list includes “vigorous sexual activity immediately after your appointments, sleeping on the side you have had filler on regularly, using anabolic steroids, smoking, and drinking alcohol.”
How to make botox and filler last longer
While the best way to maintain your filler is (sadly for our budgets) still to go for regular appointments, there are some things you can do that may help to prolong how often you need to head in.
Invest in hyaluronic acid
There have been suggestions that products with hyaluronic acid can help to maintain fillers using the same key ingredient. Dr Jonquille Chantrey, Surgeon and International Lecturer, is an advocate for investing in a good hyaluronic acid product, which can particularly help when massaged into lips.
“I always recommend using the H.A. Intensifier from SkinCeuticals to my dermal filler patients, because it has been scientifically proven to increase the natural hyaluronic acid content of the skin by 30% with continued daily use. It also has 3 different types of hyaluronic acid which means there is plenty of hyaluronic acid in there to hydrate the skin; the theory is that your body doesn’t need to break down fillers as quickly.”
Dr Wassim also recommends the 3-D lip product by Teoxane, which is “designed to plump up the lips and has the same resilient hyaluronic acid in it as the fillers.”
While other aestheticians debate the effectiveness of this technique (Dr Dhillon says most formulas won’t penetrate as deep as the filler), they do agree that the ingredient is excellent for keeping skin hydrated on the whole, which can maintain your skin’s condition and perhaps decrease the regularity of appointments needed.
“A good skincare regime including hyaluronic acid serum can beautifully compliment elegantly placed fillers,” says Dr Dhillon, while Dr Muntasar explains: “Regarding using hyaluronic topically, that could potentially could increase the length of time that your filler lasts, but it is more because hyaluronic would increase the moisture and hydration in the skin, therefore improving skin quality and helping filler last longer.”
Ensure your skincare routine is on point
This nicely leads onto your skincare routine as a whole, which is crucial in maintaining fillers and Botox.
Dr Muntasar maintains that having a good quality skincare routine is the “number one” way to help make Botox and filler last longer.
For Botox in particular, keeping skin super hydrated and tended to can decrease a need for super regular appointments. Dehydration is one of the leading causes for ageing, meaning that skin which is quenched will likely experience less fine lines and wrinkles on the whole. Use ingredients that will support your skin’s moisture barrier (the layer that keeps the good stuff in and the bad out), such as ceramides, squalane, and of course, hyaluronic acid.
