How To Travel As A Vegan In British Columbia

Traveling as a vegan has never been easier but it’s important to know where to find plant-based food options on your journey. The movement towards a more sustainable, healthy, and cruelty-free lifestyle is gaining in popularity as people ditch animal products for plant-based alternatives. British Columbia, known for stunning mountain ranges, rainforests, and peaceful beaches, is an exciting destination in all four seasons. There are diverse communities providing tempting and delicious dining experiences and lots of fresh food options. Whether you are vegan, trying out Meatless Mondays, or just curious what all the fuss about plants is about, here are five restaurants I visited in British Columbia with vegan options.

Vancouver – Good Dogs Plant Foods

On my first night in Vancouver I stumbled upon Good Dogs Plant Foods, a fully vegan restaurant on Robson Street. The owner is delightful, kind, and cares about animals and the trendy restaurant is decorated in colorful eye-catching artwork and unique memorabilia. Good Dogs mission is to serve healthy, fast, and delicious food that is good for people and good for the planet. Dishes contain ingredients sourced from local farms and they use multiple cooking techniques and textures to keep things interesting. With a huge selection of plant-based hot dogs I went for the ballpark dog loaded with house sauerkraut, crispy onion, grainy dijon, and house ketchup with fries and a side house salad. In addition to many gourmet vegan hot dogs, they create salads, bowls, and mouth-watering appetizers. They also serve crafted cocktails and local brews and enjoy an ice cream float for dessert.

It’s worth mentioning that several people told me to check out the plant-based restaurant called Meet. They have three locations – Gastown, Yaletown and Main, and their menu items look delicious. Meet’s mission is to help people transition away from eating animals and encourage them to eat more plants. Meet is on my list for next time!

Granville Island – Public Market

Granville Island is the perfect day trip and a magical destination within the city. Just hop on a False Creek Ferry in Vancouver at one of nine dock locations and the adorable little boat takes you right there. Granville Island is a charming place to walk around, shop, listen to music, and immerse yourself in the artistic and cultural hub with a historic maritime heritage. Fresh produce is in every direction at the public market and it’s a good opportunity to stock up on fruits and veggies. Laurelle’s Fine Foods is a family-owned bakery deli, and although they are not a plant-based restaurant, but they offer a number of options for vegans such as an assortment of fresh salads (kale, quinoa, yam, or Asian bean) and pastry rolls (The Mexican flax rolls and tofu pastry rolls are vegan).

There are several vegan dessert options and snacks such as the walnut brownie, healthy muffins and blueberry oat bars. Grab a plant-based smoothie or fresh juice at Fraser Valley Juice & Salad and take it outside to enjoy near the water and watch the boats sail by.

Clearwater – The Wild Flour Bakery Café

Although not a vegan restaurant, this delicious and intimate café has several healthy plant-based options and the owners are really nice and will tailor sandwiches and wraps to your preference. The Wild Flour Bakery Café creates meals using fresh quality ingredients and everything is made from scratch, right down to their own freshly milled ancient grain flowers used in baking. They also support the local community and organic food producers in the area. It was so good I went back again (It was challenging to find vegan options in Clearwater, so plan ahead) Menu selections include a roast carrot and quinoa wrap, vegan herb roasted potatoes, smoky bean and rice burrito, and they have an assortment of vegan desserts and muffins, I took several to go and enjoyed them while hiking through Wells Gray Provincial Park in search of waterfalls.

Salmon Arm – Still Food Bistro

Still Food Bistro is the only all vegan restaurant in Salmon Arm and a cute place for weekend brunch or lunch. I devoured their breakfast Sammy (plant-based sausage, plant-based egg, cheese, mayo, greens) and a side of potato salad with a tall oat milk latte. They also have croissants (Grab a few to go!), falafel, salads, chick’n burger, tacos, curry bowls, and mushroom ramen. Save room for their yummy vegan desserts such as brownies, cinnamon rolls, and carrot cake. Their heartfelt and inspiring mission is to save millions of animals one bite and sip at a time.

Just a few feet away on the same street is the famous Shuswap Pie Company and their apple pie is vegan and oh so delicious!

Kamloops – Yew Street Food Hall

The Yew Street Food Hall recently opened in Kamloops and it’s a fun culinary experience for a night out. Locally owned restaurants come together under one roof to offer a variety of artisanal and niche dining concepts in the North Shore community. There are ten vendors and one is fully vegan, Veggie Bomb. Serving vegan street food such as tacos loaded with bbq pulled jack, organic spiced black beans, battered yams or veggie bomb meatballs – you will not go hungry here. Their food is packed with flavours and I had the Atomic Bowl with organic brown basmati rice, bbq pulled jack, the bomb sauce and veggies. I sipped on a ginger mint lemonade and took a vegan cupcake back to my hotel for dessert. Veggie Bomb is the only fully vegan restaurant in Kamloops, hopefully it does well and more places will follow in their plant-based footprints.
