Scientists frequently warn about deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.
But a lesser-known process called ‘degradation’ – where trees have been affected by logging, mining, fires, expansion of roads or other human activity – is just as harmful.
According to a new study, 38 per cent of what’s left of the Amazon has been degraded in some way by humans – more than previously realised.
To put that into perspective, it’s the equivalent to 10 times the size of the UK.

The new study follows the appointment of a new Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has vowed to give the Amazon rainforest better protection.
It’s been authored by a team of international researchers, from institutions including Lancaster University and University of East Anglia.
Findings were based on satellite imagery and a review of published data outlining changes in the Amazon region between 2001 and 2018.
‘Degradation benefits the few, but places important burdens on many,’ said co-author Dr Rachel Carmenta at the University of East Anglia.
‘Few people profit from the degradation processes, yet many lose out across all dimensions of human well-being – including health, nutrition and the place attachments held for the forest landscapes where they live.
‘Furthermore, many of these burdens are hidden at present; recognising them will help enable better governance with social justice at the centre.’
The Amazon spans 2.1 million square miles across eight countries – Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname – but the majority, around 60 per cent, is within Brazil’s borders.
As a result, much of the battle against degradation and deforestation is the job of the Brazilian government.

Although the two are sometimes confused, degradation is different from deforestation, where the forest is removed altogether and a new land use, such as agriculture, is established in its place.
Although highly degraded forests can lose almost all of the trees, the land use itself does not change.
However, in both cases the capacity of a forest to store carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas, are compromised.
Trees help stop climate change by removing CO2 from the air, using it for photosynthesis and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere.
Forests are therefore important ‘carbon sinks’ – ecosystems that are capable of capturing and storing large amounts of CO2.
‘The disturbance of the remaining forest causes a long term loss of their capacity to store carbon,’ study author Jos Barlow, a professor of conservation science at Lancaster University, told MailOnline.
‘For example, when fire escapes into a rainforest, it kills around 40 per cent of the trees.
‘The dead trees then decompose, or are burned by a subsequent fire, releasing carbon into the atmosphere.
‘Furthermore, these emissions are not offset by the growth of new trees, which store very little carbon compared to the large trees that have been lost.’
According to the study, four key factors drive forest degradation – forest fire, selective logging (such as illegal logging), extreme drought and what’s known as ‘edge effects’, which means changes that occur in adjacent areas.

Up to 38 per cent of the remaining Amazon forest area – equivalent to 10 times the size of the UK – has been affected by degradation.
This is causing carbon emissions equivalent to or greater than those from deforestation, says the study, published in the journal Science.
The authors propose creating a monitoring system for forest degradation, as well as prevention and curbing of illegal logging and controlling the use of fire.
One suggestion is the concept of ‘smart forests’ which, like the idea of ‘smart cities’, could use sensors to collect data to improve the quality of the environment.
