Hurricane journo reveals why she put condom on microphone

A Florida reporter covering the devastating US hurricane emergency has revealed why she was holding a condom as she delivered her cross.

Hurricane Ian, one of the strongest storms ever to hit the US mainland, flooded Gulf Coast communities and knocked out power to millions before plowing across the peninsula to the Atlantic Ocean.

NBC2’s Kyla Galer was covering the wild storm this week when viewers were caught off guard by her microphone, which was covered by a condom.

The journalist took to Instagram to share more, saying the thing that left viewers distracted actually served a pretty important purpose.

“A lot of people are asking what is on my microphone,” she said.

“It is what you think it is. It’s a condom. It helps protect the gear. You can’t get these mics wet.

“There’s a lot of wind and a lot of rain, so we gotta do what we gotta do and that is put a condom on the microphone.”

She added later: “We gotta protect our gear at all costs.”

ABC7’s Jeff Butera joined in the Twitter fun making light of the pictures circulating online.

“WE PRACTICE SAFE HURRICANE REPORTING,” he posted.

“Yes, it’s a condom. Nothing better to waterproof a microphone.”

It’s not the first time the contraceptive measure has been put to use in an unusual manner.

Aussie paddler Jess Fox revealed a condom saved her damaged kayak at last year’s Olympics in Tokyo.

Taking to Instagram she showed how technicians first covered the kayak’s damaged nose with a carbon mixture.

The soft mixture was then held in place with a stretched condom.

“Bet you never knew condoms could be used for kayak repairs,” she wrote to her fans.

“Very stretchy much strong. It gives the carbon a smooth finish.”

Meanwhile emergency crews have worked to reach stranded residents as Hurricane Ian trained its sights on the Carolinas after cutting a coast-to-coast path of destruction across Florida, leaving behind deadly floodwaters, downed power lines and widespread damage.

Florida’s death toll remains uncertain amid scattered reports of casualties.

President Joe Biden, speaking at Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) headquarters in Washington, said Ian could prove to be the deadliest in state history.

“The numbers are still unclear, but we’re hearing early reports of what may be substantial loss of life,” he said.
