Hyundai Creta EV is expected to be launched in the Rs 20 lakh segment – Launch planned in 2025
Hyundai Creta is the volume champ where compact SUVs are concerned. Sales hover in the 10K to 15K mark per month. When its platform partner Seltos is brought into picture, combined sales are around 20K to 24K per month. South Korean cousins have stormed the compact SUV space for good.
With India now being the third largest automotive market in the world after China and USA, there is endless potential. EVs play a vital role in the near future and hence we are witnessing the rise of EVs. Hyundai is reportedly working on an electric Creta which will rival the MG ZS EV in 2025. Let’s take a look.
Hyundai Creta Electric Spied Again
Hyundai seems to be taking a top-down approach as far as their EV strategy is concerned. Starting from premium EVs and making it down to more cost-effective vehicles. Internally known as SU2i EV, Hyundai Creta Electric is already in development. It has now been spied once again, wearing barely any camouflage.
Latest Creta EV spy shots are credited to Team-BHP member MAS, who said, “Saw the zero-camouflaged Creta Electric on Chennai Bangalore Expressway yesterday. No Exhaust, No radiator. The driver was driving pretty fast. Both the bumpers were of a different shade of silver when compared to the body.”
The Creta EV test mule is wearing the same design as the existing Creta. We can expect the design to be updated by the time it is launched. In related news, Hyundai has started testing Creta facelift for the Indian market. Battery pack could be derived from the Kona EV. If that is the case, Creta EV will be powered by a 100 kW electric motor delivering about 136 hp power and 395 Nm torque. Range of Creta Electric will be over 400 kms on single charge.
With electrification of Creta, we can expect electric versions of other Hyundai and Kia vehicles in India in the future. Seltos electric is could also be planned, based on the same platform of Creta EV. Popularity and demand will play a key role in deciding which vehicles will get an electric treatment.
What To Expect?
Hyundai is eyeing volumes of around 25,000 per annum of the Creta EV. Series production of Hyundai Creta Electric might start by 2024 end. Production version might be showcased at the 2025 Auto Expo. Along with Creta EV, Hyundai is also developing e-GMP platform for scalability for domestic and global markets.
Come 2025, there will be a lot of competition for Hyundai’s affordable Creta Electric. Primarily, Maruti YY8 electric SUV which is launching around the same timeframe as electric Creta. Maruti electric SUV production version of that will be showcased at 2025 Auto Expo as well. Tata Motors and Mahindra have already revealed plans to launch new EVs by 2025. Other players like MG, Renault-Nissan are also working on launching new EVs in the Rs 20 lakh range.
